Lodging Details
The majority of our Southern Oman fishing packages include comfortable and modern resort accommodations in the Hawana Salalah development, a new hotel and resort area that is spread along four miles of white sandy beaches and turquoise waters only 30 minutes from the main airport. Hawana Salalah offers great accommodations, food, pools, and a large main marina. The resort has a promenade around the marina with shops, restaurants, and a friendly and safe environment. At certain times of the year and depending on how far up and down the coast our outfitters are running, they may also use more traditional Omani guesthouses, which offer a unique experience when fishing in more remote areas.
The Sultanate of Oman is located on the southeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula, known for its political and economic stability, rich history, and remarkable nature. Salalah has developed a reputation for being a premium, year-round international tourism destination. From lush green wadis and beautiful white sand beaches to ancient forts and museums, it offers a look at Oman’s history and its future and is easily accessible from neighboring countries and many European cities. The area is very different from much of the rest of the Arabian peninsula in that it receives a significant amount of rainfall concentrated in the Monsoon season in July and August (known locally as the Khareef). The temperature drops, Wadis run high, the waterfalls of the mountains, and everything around Salalah turns green. This effect lasts throughout the year and gives the region a luxuriant feel as compared to the stark desert beauty of the rest of the peninsula.
Food and Beverages
Hawana Salalah offers guests a wide variety of dining options that include regional and local offerings as well as cuisines from around the world. Hotel guests have access to more than 17 specialty restaurants and cafes to dine in daily.
Typical Length of Stay
All Southern Oman trip packages are based on either three (3) fishing days or six (6) fishing day packages.
Non-Angling Activities and Options
The Hawana Salalah resort area offers an amazing line-up of things to do. Aside from the great fishing that is found along the coastline, there is a wide range of activities to enjoy in Hawana Salalah, including the Hawana Aqua Park, parasailing, dune trekking, scuba diving around Salalah and Mirbat, mountain excursions, tours across the Hawana Salalah lagoon on a traditional wooden dhow. endless beaches, and more. The Empty Quarter in Salalah (known as Al Rub’ Al Khali) is one of the largest sand deserts in the world, and day tours can be arranged with stops at the lost city of Ubar and the village of Shisr. Each of the three hotels in Hawana Salalah also offers full spa and fitness facilities.
Internet / Communications
Internet access, Wi-Fi hotspots, and cell coverage are available throughout the Hawana Salalah area. You will have no problem connecting and switching on in the main resort areas. If fishing or staying in more remote locations, connectivity may be limited or non-existent.
How To Get There
Most anglers headed to Southern Oman begin their trip by flying into Dubai and UAE, as the Dubai International Airport is the largest transportation hub in the entire region. The main airline that services the region is Emirates. To access Oman, there are a number of international airlines that fly into Salalah. That said, the ones that we typically use and recommend are Fly Dubai (a subsidiary of Emirates), Air Arabia, and Oman Air, as these airlines offer daily flights from of Dubai and Sharjah with plenty of flexibility to spend time in Dubai before heading to Oman. Depending on dates and schedules, flights to Salalah are either via Muscat or direct from Dubai. Ground transportation will be arranged from the airport to your hotel. The outfitter will arrange any transport up or down the coast to ensure you are in the right place at the right time.
Arrival and Departure Details / Times
We recommend that all Southern Oman packages (either 4 night/3 fishing day packages or 7 night/6 fishing day packages) begin on a Saturday or a Tuesday. Yellow Dog will assist with details and date options. It is also possible (and recommended) to pair fishing in Dubai with a Salalah fishing trip.
Documents Required
All U.S. citizens are required to have a valid passport that does not expire within six (6) months of trips dates. Please be sure that your passport has at least two blank, unstamped pages remaining in the back, and that it is not torn, delaminated, or damaged. The kind of visa needed to enter Oman depends on several factors such as your nationality, the purpose of your planned visit, and its duration. Citizens of the United States of America do not need to obtain a tourist visa if they are planning on staying less than 14 days in the country. If you are planning on staying 14 days or longer, you can purchase a visa on the Royal Oman Police E-Visa website or upon arrival at Omani international airports and land crossings.

General Information
Although a relatively new option for fishing in the region, our outfitter’s relationship with fishing in Southern Oman goes back more than 15 years. This is a program that offers first-class fishing and on-water experiences coupled with a program that is supporting and building the local fishing sportfishing community.
The main target species in Salalah Southern Oman are Trachinotus Africanus, which is the 4th permit species and Southern Oman is probably the only place on the planet at the moment to be able to target them on a regular basis. The Africanus found in this area is what has traveling anglers and permit junkies excited: They’re big, they inhabit incredibly challenging environments, and they are the ultimate target if permit fishing is your thing. The Africanus live and feed in the rocks along the shore, creating a challenging environment to hook and land these fish. Their power in the shallows and around the rocks put them in a category similar to that of giant trevally, with incredible power and the definite possibility that you will be “reefed” when trying to land one of these fish!
There are a large number of additional species to target from inshore species like bream, trevally, and Indo Pacific permit (Trachinotus Blochii) to offshore species such as dorado, sailfish, and tuna. Southern Oman is still wild and remote in places and although the main program is Africanus permit, there are options at the right time to fish remote islands for giant trevally, milkfish, and parrotfish. This is definitely an off-the-beaten-track trip!
Boats and Equipment
Our outfitter utilizes two custom-built, 24-foot center console boat designed for fly fishing the waters and coastlines of Southern Oman. The boat takes two fly anglers and one crew member at a time and is light enough to be trailered to different areas and maneuverable enough to be effective in the shallows. These boats have fore and aft casting platforms, lean bars for added stability and comfort, under-deck rod storage, side console storage, and many more features. These boats are clean and very well-designed for fly fishermen.
We recommend that anglers bring their own rods, reels, and other equipment when fishing in Oman. We recommend 10-weight rods for the majority of inshore species such as permit, bream, dorado, and other small species. A larger 12-weight is also applicable for sailfish, tuna, and marlin. Floating lines are the norm, as most fishing takes place in shallow water. Intermediate sink tip lines can also be effective when fishing to permit along the beach to effectively get the fly down through the waves. You will want a variety of flies for fishing in the area, and specific patterns will of course depend on the species you are targeting. For permit, you can expect to use different sizes and weights of crab, shrimp, and mussel flies. Additionally, he guides will also have flies tied up for you to use during your trip and are included in your fishing package.
