How to Get There
Overnight flights from the United States to and from Santiago, Chile (SCL) are available on American Airlines, Delta, or LATAM. From there, guests take a three (3) hour flight south to the Balmaceda Airport (BBA). Guests typically overnight in Coyhaique before being picked up by their guides the next morning. The drive time from Coyhaique to the lodge is approximately 6 hours, but the views and scenery are stunning the whole way, and there are many opportunities to stop for breaks and photos.
Arrival and Departure Details / Times
When arriving from the US or Europe, plan on departing your home city on a Thursday. Generally, your overnight flight will be Thursday night, arriving in Santiago on Friday morning. We highly recommend guests keep traveling from Santiago to Balmaceda, and spend Friday night in Coyhaique, so you can rest at the Hotel and prepare for your trip south to Patagonia Baker Lodge the next morning. On the day of your departure from the lodge, we recommend that travelers book a return flight after 2:00pm to allow for enough time to drive from the lodge to the airport which is approximately 6 hours.

General Information
Rio Baker
The Baker River is massive, flowing from General Carrera Lake as a rich blue, gin-clear current pushing 35,000 cfs. At first glance, a river this size might seem impossible to fish, but it offers exceptional dry fly and sight-fishing. From the lodge’s front deck, it’s common to spot rainbow trout over 20 inches, with rocky banks providing prime holding water. In the seams, eddies, and backwaters, dozens of feeding rainbows can be seen surfing the currents to take dry flies. Anglers can explore the Baker on walk-and-wade missions or by jet boat, targeting the most productive stretches. While large rainbows are abundant, it pays to stay sharp—trophy browns over 24 inches can appear at any moment.
Rio Cochrane
About 45 minutes south of Patagonia Baker Lodge lies the small town of Cochrane, home to the nearby Cochrane River. Flowing from Cochrane Lake, the river shares the same gin-clear quality as the Baker but has a very different character. At first glance, it resembles a large spring creek, yet it’s a medium-sized river winding between thick weed beds and undercut banks. These weed beds shelter massive, vibrant brown trout in the 4- to 8-pound class—and sometimes larger. With abundant caddis hatches, seasonal terrestrials, mayflies, and a rich forage base, the river supports an impressive population of large fish. On sunny days, the Cochrane rivals New Zealand’s best trout rivers for sight-fishing, offering technical challenges when targeting holding or rising fish. Watching hefty browns and rainbows feed near the surface is unforgettable, and when an angler slips into position and delivers the right cast, it doesn’t get better. The river offers numerous beats and is typically fished on 1–2 km walk-and-wade days, moving slowly to target the many trout it holds.
Lakes
We strongly encourage North American anglers to experience the region’s exceptional lake fishing. The larger lakes feature clear water, rocky shoals, and outstanding sight-fishing opportunities. Dragonflies and damselflies often trigger explosive, leaping eats right beside the boat. These waters rival New Zealand’s finest trout streams for both visual excitement and the anticipation of encountering trophy fish. With reed lines, lush weed beds, overhanging brush, and timbered shorelines, the lakes offer endless chances to spot and cast to cruising trout.
Boats and Equipment
Patagonia Baker Lodge utilizes both drift boats and jet boats to access the best fishing in the area. Depending on your angling desires, anglers can opt to walk and wade smaller sections of nearby streams or the Rio Cochrane, or choose to float the larger Rio Baker or access the lakes via jet boat.
The lodge does have some rental equipment available, though it should be reserved in advance. Anglers should bring a 9’ 6-weight as their primary rod, though an additional 5 and 7-Weight are beneficial depending on conditions and the fishing approach. Anglers are encouraged to bring their own waders and boots, though they can be rented if notified in advance.
