The 9000 and 5000 EN use a closed full-cage frame, which prevents thin-diameter running lines, monofilament leaders, and Euro nymphing lines from slipping between the frame and spool during casting or fighting fish. The closed frame also adds structural rigidity for heavier use. If you’re Euro nymphing or fishing with thin Spey running lines, the closed-frame models are the right choice.

Is the Hardy Averon drag fully sealed?
The drag mechanism itself is enclosed (protected from debris during normal use), but the Averon is not rated as fully waterproof or saltwater-proof. It is designed for freshwater use. While some anglers use the 7000 and 9000 for light inshore applications, we recommend keeping the Averon in freshwater environments and thoroughly rinsing with fresh water if exposed to salt. For dedicated saltwater use, Hardy’s Fortuna Regent is the appropriate choice.
