A variety of our international freshwater destinations suits traveling families and couples. Several of these are best suited to more mature (think teenage) children; we’re happy to chat about the best options for kids of all ages. Here are a few of our favorites:

Poronui Lodge (North Island, New Zealand)

Poronui is a quintessential backcountry property that embodies what it means to “go bush” in the stunning wilderness of New Zealand. What started as a rustic fishing camp on the banks of the Taharua River has evolved into a sophisticated, world-class wilderness fishing lodge that is an important component of any serious fishing itinerary in New Zealand.

The property is steeped in ancient Maori heritage and is surrounded by vast estates of privately owned Maori lands. There is a strong sense of history and tradition at the lodge and Poronui is privileged to have access and concession to much of this area. Anglers are treated to a truly remote, pristine fishing experience, whether on the property, to more than 25 miles of on-site water, or by helicopter to the more remote rivers and streams in the mountains surrounding Poronui.

Nestled in the scenic foothills of the Kaimanawa Ranges of the North Island, the lodge is the ultimate wilderness playground and while it was founded upon fly-fishing, there are countless other activities to suit the non-angling guest. The elegant accommodations at Poronui combine with a very strong and diverse fishing program to deliver an experience to its guests that is truly unbeatable.

Remota Resort (Puerto Natales, Chile)

This is an amazing and totally unique resort operation: one that we HIGHLY recommend for couples looking to combine untouched regional fishing with a high-end, adventurous visit to Southern Chile. Remota Resort was designed by GermĂĄn del Sol, the great Chilean architect who had a hand in several other famous projects in Torres del Paine National Park and the Atacama Desert.

From the outside, the resort complex is simply stunning. An experiment in modernism that takes root in local and regional architecture. Remota is built on several levels, long and asymmetrically-shaped, with huge windows, fire pits, and lounging areas everywhere. There is no place like it on the planet.

Rio Manso Lodge (Bariloche, Argentina)

Rio Manso Lodge is located in the heart of Argentina's Nahuel Huapi National Park on the banks of Lake Hess and the Rio Manso itself. In an area that seems both wild and incredibly remote, the Lodge is only 90 minutes from the city of Bariloche, making it easy to access on a regular and direct basis. When fishing out of Rio Manso, guests have access to such diverse fisheries as the Rio Manso, Quieto, Pichi Leufu, and numerous area lakes.

Each of the Lodge’s eight rooms faces northwest, offering spectacular views of Lago Hess and the nearby Andes Mountains. The main living room and sitting area (complete with a huge river stone fireplace) are where cocktails and hor d’oeuvres are served each evening. Because of its close proximity to Bariloche, this operation is a great option for couples trips, shorter Patagonian fishing packages, and as an add-on to other longer Patagonian fishing adventures.

The Himalayan Outback (India)

The Himalayan Outback is not your average fishing trip, just as the Golden Mahseer is not your ordinary fish. Pursuing this armored freshwater fish draws anglers into the Himalayan frontier of northern India, where the experienced local guides of The Himalayan Outback have established a unique fishing program with mobile camps and multi-day floats on productive stretches of the Saryu and Mahakali Rivers on the Indian and Nepalese border.

Our outfitter specializes in customizing trips in this rugged frontier area and their guides have all lived and worked extensively throughout the region. A journey through the outback of the Himalayas leaves fishermen with memories of more than just a world-class fishing experience. The region's simplicity, the people encountered, and the incredible landscapes are a sight unto themselves. You will definitely want to bring your camera for this trip.
