The ideal size depends on the length of your trip and how much gear you’re bringing. For most week-long fishing trips, anglers use a large checked duffel for clothes, waders, and gear, plus a carry-on roller or backpack for essentials. If you’re bringing rods, reels, or specialty items, a dedicated rod case or boat bag often travels alongside your main luggage.

Both work, and many anglers bring one of each. Roller bags are easier to maneuver through airports and urban areas, while duffels are lighter, more flexible, and easier to load into planes, boats, and vehicles in remote destinations. Many modern fishing duffels now come with backpack straps for added convenience.

Fishing travel bags are built with durable, water-resistant fabrics, corrosion-resistant zippers, and thoughtful compartments for storing gear like waders, boots, reels, and tackle. While regular luggage works fine for simple trips, fishing-specific travel bags are purpose-built for anglers heading to rugged or wet environments.

Look for water-resistant construction, strong handles, reinforced seams, and compartments that help organize your gear. Compression straps, backpack carry options, and rugged wheels (for roller bags) are also useful. For anglers, non-corrosive zippers and waterproof materials are especially important in saltwater environments.
