Lower Madison River Fishing Reports
Updated Dec 08, 25

*Flow Data: Madison River below Ennis Lake near McAllister, MT

Good fishing should continue all winter for the most part. It is cold into the weekend but some nice temperatures are expected next week. Fishing can be really good with the given conditions. Just expect to break ice from your guides. You may still see some fish rising when the wind is low and we have some cloud cover. Mostly midges now. Nymphing has been the most consistent way to catch trout on the lower. Streamer fishing has slowed with the cold. Fishing a size #18 or #20 Griffith's gnat or Parachute Adams with good drag free drift has been very effective on the trout that are rising to midges. Perdigons, caddis pupa, and midges have been effective smaller nymphs. Worms should be in play through the winter. For streamer fishing, a Black Bugger, Skiddish Smolt, or Lil' Kim may find a few fish here and there.

Keep an eye out for and avoid brown trout redds.

Montana fishing licenses are available for purchase online at Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks and at Yellow Dog Flyfishing - Fly Shop (some exceptions may apply). If you are planning to fish in the headwaters of the Gallatin River area above Taylor's Fork (approx. 1 mile upstream); be aware that most of this is in Yellowstone National Park which requires a separate fishing license and is seasonally open to fishing according to YNP regulations.
