Fish are now mostly hanging out in the deeper pools. Cold into the weekend but some favorable temperatures next week may make it worth hitting the river for a few hours. No sense in getting out until the air temperatures get above freezing. Unless you like breaking ice out of your guides, I suppose. Midges will be hatching through the remainder of the winter. Clouds are nearly necessary to make the dry fly action worth while. Fish can be found rising in some seemingly isolated areas. Deep nymphing has been most consistent. Smaller nymphs are catching the trouts attention more than anything subsurface. Stonefly nymphs have started to see more action. Perdigons, Olive Micro Mayflies and pheasant tails have been finding success regularly. Worms will also be very effective moving forward. Streamer fishing has slowed significantly with the cold weather. Natural colored smaller streamers have been working the best for me. Buggers, sculpins, and zonkers are all excellent choices. If you are feeling frisky maybe try a sparkle yummy.

Montana fishing licenses are available for purchase online at Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks and at Yellow Dog Flyfishing - Fly Shop (some exceptions may apply). If you are planning to fish in the headwaters of the Gallatin River area above Taylor's Fork (approx. 1 mile upstream); be aware that most of this is in Yellowstone National Park which requires a separate fishing license and is seasonally open to fishing according to YNP regulations.
