Description

In 1995, Ted Juracsik introduced a fly reel that redefined what saltwater anglers expected from their equipment. In the three decades since, very little about the Tibor Everglades has changed — because very little needed to. The Everglades has helped set over 950 world fly fishing records across more than 350 species. Guides in the Florida Keys have fished them for 20 years without a mechanical failure. They have been dunked, dropped, soaked in salt for weeks, and subjected to the most sustained drag pressure that bonefish, permit, and inshore gamefish can produce. They come back for more.

Ted Juracsik built the Tibor series with a clear philosophy: the most beautiful machines have the fewest moving parts. That philosophy is visible in every detail of the Everglades. The frame and spool are machined from solid bar-stock aluminum in Delray Beach, Florida. The drag system is an impregnated micrograin cork disc — the same material, the same architecture, the same result that Lefty Kreh and Flip Pallot helped Ted refine before the first reel ever shipped. The cork is permanently impregnated with lubricant, delivering zero startup inertia from the first moment a fish runs, at any drag setting, under any conditions. The drag can be disassembled with a penny if maintenance is ever needed and serviced on the water without tools or dealer assistance.

The Everglades is the smallest reel in the standard Tibor lineup, sized for 7 through 9 weight rods and holding 200 yards of 20 lb Micron backing. It is the perfect match for bonefish, permit, redfish, snook, striped bass, and false albacore on the saltwater side, and for steelhead and Atlantic salmon in freshwater. The main gear and spool rotate on three sealed precision ceramic ball bearings. A mechanical clutch system allows easy left-to-right retrieve conversion. Every reel is serialized and comes with a free personalized nameplate and a thick neoprene case.

Features

Impregnated Micrograin Cork Drag — Permanently lubricated cork disc delivers virtually zero startup inertia at any drag setting. Self-maintaining under normal use; field-serviceable with a penny if needed. The same system, refined with input from Lefty Kreh and Flip Pallot, since 1995.
•    Three Sealed Precision Ceramic Ball Bearings — Both the main gear and spool rotate on ceramic bearings for smooth, corrosion-resistant performance. Heat-wicking aluminum main gear minimizes buildup during long runs.
•    Triple Outgoing Click — Three distinct clicks per revolution on outgoing drag provide clear audible feedback during a run. Easily removable for silent operation.
•    Solid Bar-Stock Aluminum Frame & Spool — CNC-machined from solid billet aluminum in Delray Beach, Florida. Completely ventilated spool and frame design dissipates heat during long runs and promotes fast drying.
•    Mechanical Clutch Retrieve Conversion — Simple, positive retrieve direction change from left to right hand without tools.
•    Detented Drag Adjustment — Smooth, positive drag clicks provide repeatable, on-the-fly pressure settings with clear tactile feedback between stops.
•    QuickChange Spool System — Single moving part for spool removal. Fast, reliable, and field-serviceable.
•    Free Personalized Nameplate — Every Tibor Everglades ships with a free engraved nameplate. Serial number located under the nameplate for identification and protection.
•    Frost, Polished & Custom Finish Options — Frost (matte, non-reflective Mil-A-8625 Type II anodizing) for sight-fishing; Standard Polished and Custom Polished with color options for drag knob, stopnut, reelstand, and spool.
•    Includes Extra-Thick Neoprene Case — Shipped with protective neoprene pouch for storage and travel.
•    Limited Lifetime Warranty — Covers defects in materials and workmanship. Made in Delray Beach, Florida, USA.

Maintenance

After each use, Tibor Reels should be rinsed thoroughly in fresh water. Periodically, especially after extensive exposure to saltwater, the line and backing should be removed and wiped down with a wet cloth to remove salt.

To disassemble a reel for cleaning, the only tool required is a penny. All reels are lubricated at the factory prior to assembly and relubrication is generally not necessary. Tibor Graphite Lube may be used to lubricate the cork drag disc.

Please note: Exceeding the recommended capacity by over-filling the spool and/or putting line on too tightly or with too much tension may damage the spool and is not covered under warranty. Please refer to the capacity chart above as your guide. Monofilment line is not recommended for use on Tibor reels. Should you have any questions about backing for your reel, please contact your authorized Tibor Dealer.

FAQ

Who is the Tibor Everglades for?
The Tibor Everglades is for serious saltwater and anadromous fly anglers who want a reel built to last a lifetime — literally. It’s the reel of choice for guides on the Florida Keys flats who need something that performs flawlessly day after day for decades, for travelers heading to demanding destinations who want zero chance of equipment failure, and for anglers who appreciate American craftsmanship and deliberate mechanical simplicity over trend-driven design. If you want a reel that Ted Juracsik built by hand in Delray Beach, Florida, that has helped set over 950 world records, the Everglades is exactly that.

What line weights does the Tibor Everglades handle?
The Tibor Everglades is designed for 7, 8, and 9 weight rods. It holds 200 yards of 20 lb Micron backing with a WF8F line, or 300 yards of 65 lb Power Pro Super 8 Slick. It is the smallest reel in the standard Tibor lineup and is ideally positioned for inshore saltwater (bonefish, permit, redfish, snook, striped bass), anadromous species (steelhead, Atlantic and Pacific salmon), and trout spey or switch rod applications.

What makes the Tibor cork drag different from a sealed disc drag?
The Tibor Everglades uses an impregnated micrograin cork drag disc — the same basic architecture Ted Juracsik introduced in 1995 and has seen little reason to change since. The cork is permanently impregnated with lubricant, meaning it maintains its smoothness without periodic re-oiling under normal use. The drag operates with virtually zero startup inertia — the cork engages so smoothly that the transition from stillness to motion is imperceptible, which protects tippets at any drag setting. The drag is not sealed in the traditional sense, but is self-maintaining and field-serviceable with just a penny — no tools required to disassemble. Unlike some sealed systems where internal contamination becomes a depot repair situation, the Tibor can be cleaned and serviced on the water.

What are the downsides of the Tibor Everglades?
The Tibor Everglades has a few genuine trade-offs worth understanding. First, it is one of the heavier reels in its class at 8.5 oz — compared to 5.3 oz for the Nautilus GTS 7/8 or 5.7 oz for the Lamson Litespeed M8 — which can be noticeable on a full day of wading. Second, the cork drag is not sealed, which means more disciplined post-fishing maintenance is required in saltwater environments, and in genuinely sandy conditions like flats wading, it requires more attention than a fully sealed competitor. Third, the arbor diameter is smaller than most modern large-arbor reels, resulting in slower line retrieval — independent testing has noted the Everglades has among the smallest arbors and slowest retrieve rates in its weight class. Fourth, at $770–$850+ depending on finish, the Everglades is priced at the upper tier of the market. Fifth, it is a single-size reel with no additional sizes in the Everglades model — anglers who need more capacity for larger tarpon must move to a different Tibor model entirely.
