Description
Wild Montana Hungarian partridge is the benchmark for tying true soft hackles. A single late-season skin provides hundreds of usable feathers, covering the full size range—from tiny collar fibers for #18 Sil’s Midges to fuller hackles for classic wets.
Each wild skin offers a natural progression of feather sizes: small, finely mottled feathers at the head for the smallest flies; perfectly marked gray flank feathers for traditional soft hackles; and larger golden-brown and tan feathers along the back and toward the tail for bigger patterns and warmwater or saltwater applications. This complete feather spectrum allows tiers to work from one bird across multiple hook sizes and styles.
Winter-harvested wild birds produce cleaner, intact plumage with stronger stems, richer coloration, and dense feather coverage. The result is more usable material per skin, better wraps on the hook, and soft hackles that pulse naturally in the current.
These birds are ethically harvested by dedicated upland hunters and fully utilized, not raised for the tying trade. Carefully prepared skins ensure high tying performance and long-term durability. A foundational material for Syl's Midges, spiders, emergers, and classic wet flies.
