While diversity is the spice of life, some fly-fishing adventures must be repeated over-and-over. The Middle Fork of the Salmon River is one of those excursions that demands repeating. While the scenery and ridiculously consistent fly-fishing dry flies for cutthroat trout are all amazing, it is the whole experience that draws us back to the Frank Church Wilderness.
Just recently, five families with kids ranging from 12 to 16 enjoyed hot fishing during the days, but also tons ‘o family fun, which included hiking, hot springs, checking out Native American petroglyphs, wildlife viewing, kayaking and lots of swimming. The highlight meal was either the tuna and steak night or Dino’s Dutch oven lasagna with freshly baked bread.
It can be difficult to find the time in our busy lives to slow down, unplug and have uninterrupted, quality family time, but the Middle Fork of the Salmon will exceed your expectations on that front. The only way to fish the Middle Fork of the Salmon is by floating the 75 mile stretch of river and camping along the way—we loved our spacious drift boats. They were safe, great to fish from and the drift boats allowed the guides to hold the boat in the best possible fishing water while we caught fish after fish.
The third-generation outfitter and guide team are truly one of the finest crews in the West. Whether you are experienced anglers or looking to get your kids fishing, this team of seasoned guides will take great care of you. The Middle Fork of the Salmon might be the ultimate kid fishing river, too; due to the willingness of the cutthroat trout to eat dry flies…and there is no cell phone access so we all connected in ways that truly matter!
Each evening after floating and fishing, the amazing team of crew, chef and guides set up our spacious tents and elevated cots and prepared deliciously healthy meals over open fires. We watched stars and played music and shared stories as the embers slid up into the heavens. It truly was a great trip and one the families will be talking about for a long, long time. Book far in advance because space is very limited with Yellow Dog’s outfitter of choice.
