Javohn Update: Surgery Went Well and Full Recovery Expected

May 03, 23
Many people have been calling and emailing Yellow Dog over the past few days, asking for updates and reports on the Garbutt family and young Javohn. As you may know, Javohn underwent more than six hours of brain surgery on Wednesday, July 11 at Children’s Hospital Colorado, where doctors performed a complicated procedure to remove a tumor from Javohn's head. We have spoken with Javohn's father, Scully Garbutt, several times since the surgery, and we are pleased to let everyone know that Javohn’s procedure went very well.

So far, Javohn is doing great, and things are looking very positive. The doctor’s feel confident they removed 100% of the tumor and they expect a full and complete recovery in the long term. They will know for sure by the middle of next week, but everyone is very optimistic about the entire procedure as well as an outlook for a full recovery. The Garbutt’s will remain in the hospital in Denver for at least another week. They hope that Javohn heads home to Belize healthy and fully cured.

We are very pleased with the success of the GoFundMe campaign that was launched earlier. To date, close to $85,000 has been raised to off-set the medical expenses of $180,000. The outpouring of support from the fly fishing community has been nothing short of amazing, and the Garbutt’s are incredibly grateful and touched so many people have stepped up to help during this difficult time.

Scully passed along the following email on Friday morning:

“I would like to express my sincere gratitude to you, the entire Yellow Dog family, and all who have helped by lending their support for Jay’s surgery. Jay has shown great improvement following the procedure, and within a day was walking, talking, smiling and watching television. The doctors say that they were able to remove the entire tumor, and we are now awaiting a biopsy result and that will determine treatment moving forward. Thank you and thank everyone for all that you have done for us. Thank you very much for all the love and support.”

We still have a way to go to assist the Garbutt family with the staggering cost of this procedure, and we would of course encourage all who can to help in any way to contribute on any level. The link for the GoFundMe page is below.
