Caddis Flies

The Mother's Day caddis or October caddis are two of many hatches anglers look forward to all year, but caddis flies make up a massive component of a trout's diet in all stages of development. These moth-like insects are well-known for the intricate and creative ways they protect themselves as nymphs. Caddis larvae are aquatic and build protective cases out of materials such as sand, twigs, and pebbles. These cases can vary in shape and size depending on the species and habitat. Caddisflies are an important food source for trout and hatches can occur throughout the year, making for excellent dry fly fishing in places like our home waters of Montana.
