Insulated/Softshell

Insulated apparel is designed to trap body heat and keep you warm in cold conditions, often using synthetic or down insulation. Softshell apparel, on the other hand, focuses on breathability, stretch, and wind resistance, making it ideal for active fishing in cool to moderate climates. Many anglers layer softshell pieces over base layers or under waterproof shells.

Most softshell jackets are water-resistant, not fully waterproof. They shed light rain and splashes but are not designed for heavy downpours or full submersion. For wet conditions, anglers often pair a softshell with a waterproof shell for complete protection.

Synthetic insulation is popular for fishing because it dries quickly, retains warmth when wet, and is lightweight. Softshells are usually made with stretch-woven polyester or nylon blended with elastane for mobility, often finished with a DWR (durable water repellent) coating for water resistance.
