Fly Fishing the Infamous Chetumal Bay

Chetumal is located on the Belize border in the northwest corner of Chetumal Bay – an extensive water body of approximately 1615 miles and encompasses the well-known and famed fisheries around Xcalak in Mexico and Ambergris Caye in Belize. The fishery around Chetumal City sees very light fishing pressure compared to other areas in the region. The waters north of Chetumal are incredibly diverse and have all of the Grand Slam species available offering year-round opportunities for bonefish, tarpon, permit, and snook. Fly Fishing Chetumal can accommodate up to six anglers with space for additional non-anglers as well. Fly Fishing Chetumal is one of the only entities specializing in guided fly fishing packages in these waters. Packages can be arranged at the beautiful Villa Marcela Calderitas Oxtankah located on the water about 20 minutes north of the city or at one of several downtown hotel locations for more budget-minded, fishing-focused anglers.

General Information
Chetumal Bay is an extensive water body encompassing approximately 1615 miles. It is surrounded by distinctive tropical flora and fauna, mangroves, and amazing natural zones with tall trees and regional vegetation. Chetumal Bay is typically associated by anglers with the waters of Xcalak and Ambergris Caye in Belize – these fisheries have been fished for decades by fly anglers. The waters near Chetumal City have been left alone and relatively untouched by fly anglers. The Fly Fishing Chetumal team has spent years exploring and mapping out this fishery and has discovered a multitude of flats and mangrove systems that provide amazing opportunities for fly anglers! There are good numbers of bonefish, permit, baby tarpon, and snook. They see large migratory tarpon during the summer and also have a population of large resident tarpon that can be targeted year round!

The fishing day starts at 6:30 a.m. with breakfast and you will meet up with your guide team at 7:30 a.m you’ll head to the dock. The fishing day is 8+ hours depending on the fishing plan established by your guide and you will typically be back at the dock around 4:00 PM.

Each boat is set up with a YETI cooler with ice, lunch, and non-alcoholic beverages. Generally lunch consists of ham, chicken, or tuna sandwiches and some snacks as cookie and treats. If you do want some beers for the boat, please make sure to bring these with you! If you are allergic to any kind of food, please let Yellow Dog know in advance – we will pass this along to the lodge.

Boats and Equipment
The boats used by Fly Fish Chetumal are 23-foot Mexican super pangas set up to comfortably accommodate two fishermen, a guide, and an assistant guide. Anglers should plan on bringing all equipment such as rods, reels, terminal tackle, and flies with them.
