Flow Data: Missouri River below Holter Dam near Wolf Creek, MT

Quick Overview

Fishing: Good

Fishing Window (best time to fish): Late morning to late evening

Best Fishing Method: Nymphing

2nd Best Method: Dry Fly Fishing

Hatches: October Caddis, BWO's

Conditions Pretty mild conditions all week in Craig with some warmer temperatures expected nearly every day. Flows remain low but stable. Weeds are a factor. The mornings have provided the best dry fly fishing. Nymphing has been good all day.

Current and Upcoming Hatches Mayfly nymphs and midge nymphs will be most active sub-surface with BWO nymphs starting to move around. Midges are around all year and hopefully fish will be keyed in on the larger insects.

October Caddis show up in September and can get fish to the surface. Try a large orange dry fly or chubby to imitate these big bugs.

BWO's are hatching in pretty good numbers and have been getting fish to the surface when conditions are right. The dry fly action can be pretty darn good when it is cool and cloudy.

Tactics and Tips Nymphing is getting a bit better with the cooler night temps and should get even better with upcoming cooler temperatures. A Caddis or crayfish trailed by a midge nymph or tan perdigon has worked really well for the nymphers. Set this double nymph rig to 3 or 4 feet under your indicator with a split shot about 1 foot above the first fly. Fishing a short leash rig with a crawfish and a drowned ant has also been a really good option in quick shallow water.

Keep your eyes peeled for fish rising. Rising trout have been pretty localized and do not seem to stick around for long. A 12' 5x leader with a size #18 Rusty Spinner or BWO Comparadun and a drag free drift should trick rising trout. The fish have been tough to trick so don't be afraid to cycle through flies and definitely be sure to get a great drift on the first cast. Streamer fishing is picking up with the cooler weather. Smaller natural flies have been a favorite but the flashy patterns like the Kreelex or Skiddish Smolt can also see some love.

Cruise an October Caddis if you do not want to commit nymphing and don't find consistently rising fish. This has been an effective way to trick nice fish.
