Yellowstone River Fishing Reports

Finally some cooler weather this week. Starting tomorrrow they say. I am ready. Water temperatures have been getting warm in town but it could be much worse all things considered. This weeks weather should drop those temps down a bit. If this happens, fish should get pretty happy. Avoid fishing when water temperatures exceed 67 degrees to avoid putting extra stress on the trout. Fishing is still most consistent on the upper river but fish are eating hoppers around Livingston and below. The action around town can be day to day. Some days good, some days not so good. Hoppers, smaller attractor dry flies, ants, and caddis patterns have all been good for dry fly anglers. Summer stones are out and about so fishing a stonefly dry early in the morning or late in the evening has been picking up some nice fish. Deep nymphing has been most consistent. Folks have been finding some nice fish with this method of angling. Smaller nymphs are catching the trouts attention more than anything subsurface. Formerly Known as Prince, Lightning Bugs, Perdigons, and pheasant tails have been finding success regularly. A lot of whitefish are eating nymphs but plenty of trout too. Streamer fishing has been OK but may pick up this week with the rain and cool weather. Best in the early morning while the sun is low. Natural and smaller streamers have been working the best for me. Buggers, sculpins, and zonkers are all excellent choices.

Montana fishing licenses are available for purchase online at Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks and at Yellow Dog Flyfishing - Fly Shop (some exceptions may apply). If you are planning to fish in the headwaters of the Gallatin River area above Taylor's Fork (approx. 1 mile upstream); be aware that most of this is in Yellowstone National Park which requires a separate fishing license and is seasonally open to fishing according to YNP regulations.
