Description

G.Loomis NRX+ 590

9' 5 weight, four piece fly rod

The new NRX+ family of freshwater fly rods are fast-action, multi-purpose sticks designed specifically for Western Trout fly-fishing. The 590 NRX+ is a versatile, powerful fly rod ideally suited for all types of fly fishing in the Bozeman area. Soft enough to handle delicate dry fly fishing and powerful enough to deliver heavy streamers across multiple current seams on the Madison River.

Edgy environmental factors like sustained wind, complex hydraulics, and natural structure all pack the potential to punish productivity. With favor stacked in nature’s corner, level the playing field with fishing tools forged to conquer these, and other common variables.

With a primary focus of maximizing versatility, these adaptable actions improve angler capability and expand tactical opportunity in difficult fishing situations. Rolled with our most advanced compound taper construction to date, NRX+ provides the power, line speed, and loop stability expected from modern fast-action rods, without compromising “feel” and finesse in the short game. This means, regardless of casting distance or difficulty, NRX+ empowers anglers with confidence-boosting control in less-than-ideal situations.

Technology

Dynamic Recovery Technology is a blended system of several elements. Our all-new Mega Modulus+ graphite matrix and GL8 resin system, combined with the industry’s most advanced compound taper construction process, creates crisp actions with smooth, rapid recovery. The key to achieving these performance characteristics is a reimaging of our proprietary Multi-Taper Design technology. Traditionally used to enhance durability and swing weight, the G. Loomis design team developed a method of applying a similar process to improve loading efficiency and feedback. This widens the power and recovery “sweet spot”, providing performance with feel regardless of casting distance.

  • Mega Modulus+ matrix is 15% lighter than original NRX, improving overall balance and feel, and limits casting fatigue
  • Smooth, rapid recovery, allowing casters to develop stable loops with less effort
  • GL8 resin possesses the same strength and impact resistance as past resin systems with less material. This reduces overall weight, and ultimately, limits fatigue
  • Materials dampen quickly, delivering a crisp, positive feel in hand

  • Not sure why, but this is a hard fly rod for me to gauge. It feels a bit sluggish and somewhat longer than nine feet. There is a lack of feel, but I agree it does what the manufacturer description says it does.
  • Very stiff and fast. Doesn’t feel good too short, better longer with power. They did achieve what the rod designer set out to do. Easy to be accurate long. Lacks touch and not as fun to cast.
  • Reel seat way too long, grip is okay, and decent backstop. Very stiff, total lack of communication at all distances. Maybe extremely long casts? Felt more like a 7 or 8 weight

  • Fast and feels like a broomstick.
  • The strength of this rod is distance of 50’. Does not load short though paired with a half-size heavy line. Perhaps a 6 weight line would be better?
  • Very stiff and poor communication. Easy accuracy, but feel like I have to force bend into the rod. I do not feel like this is a ‘true’ 5 weight. The bend of the rod is confined to the top 12”.

  • There’s no bend and not smooth at all. A little better with some weight.
  • Excels at 40’ very little sensitivity with subtle flicks. Not as pleasant at 30’.
  • Stiff, not much response/feedback. Not very comfortable.
Yellow Dog Final Takeaway

The G. Loomis NRX+ 5-weight is a powerful, fast-action rod built for distance and line speed, but it sacrifices feel and finesse in the process. It excels when casting long with weight—especially in the 40’–50’ range—but struggles with short-range accuracy, roll casts, and subtle presentations. Many casters noted that it feels more like a 6- or even 7-weight, with minimal bend confined to the tip and a generally stiff, unresponsive action across all courses. While it may suit anglers seeking maximum power and aggressive casting strokes, it lacks the touch and versatility expected from a true 5-weight.
