The Tarpon Toad is one of the most trusted and productive tarpon flies ever created, and one of our Top Tarpon Flies. Originally developed in the Florida Keys by Gary Merriman in the early 1990s, this pattern was designed to solve a problem: presenting a fly that would track straight, land softly, and remain enticing to tarpon without spooking them. The result was a simple, balanced design that has become a cornerstone of modern tarpon fishing.

The fly features a synthetic body tied merkin-style to keep it neutrally buoyant, with a long zonker tail that pulses and undulates naturally in the water. A hint of flash is often added to mimic the glint of small baitfish, while the wide profile and lightweight build allow for slower retrieves and extended time in the strike zone.

Versatility is what has cemented the Tarpon Toad’s reputation. It is equally at home in the clear, shallow flats of the Keys as it is throughout the Yucatan, Belize, and beyond. Tied in a range of colors—from classic black and purple to chartreuse, tan, or white—it can match a variety of conditions and forage. While it was designed specifically for tarpon, anglers have also found success with species like snook and redfish.

After several years, the only difference is minor: today's Toad is generally tied and fished slightly smaller than originally designed. And yes the rabbit strip is correct, tied skin–side up. Tarpon see the strip from below the fly. The Toad Too has the marabou tail. One of the two versions (bunny or marabou) is the very fly shown in the mouths of all tarpon in every magazine ad and has been the winning fly (especially when fished by Andy Mill) in more tournaments and is well known by every guide in tarpon–land.
