A major step forward for the future of Turneffe Atoll was finalized last week with the signing of the Turneffe Conservation Land Trust Agreement between the Government of Belize and the Turneffe Atoll Trust.
Signed by Belize Prime Minister John Briceño and Dr. Craig Hayes of the Turneffe Atoll Trust, the agreement permanently protects more than 17,000 acres of remaining National Land at Turneffe Atoll. The land will remain under government ownership while being protected in perpetuity for the benefit of the people of Belize.
Just as importantly for anglers and the health of the broader ecosystem, the agreement protects approximately 99% of Turneffe's seabed from dredging, overwater development, jet skis, mangrove clearing, and other unsustainable activities. These protections safeguard the mangroves, shallow flats, seagrass beds, and other habitats that make Turneffe one of Belize's most important marine ecosystems and an internationally recognized flats fishery.
The agreement also directs BZ$2.2 million to the University of Belize to establish a marine research facility at Turneffe Atoll, with plans for collaboration with the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in San Diego. Beyond the immediate protections, the agreement opens the door for a significant Blue Carbon project at Turneffe and expands the reach of the Turneffe Atoll Sustainability Association (TASA) as the management entity for the Land Trust.

Seeing that work culminate in permanent, large-scale habitat protections is a meaningful win for Turneffe, Belize, and everyone who cares about the long-term health of this fishery.
For anglers who have spent time on Turneffe—or hope to someday—this is significant news. Healthy flats fisheries depend on healthy habitat, and protecting the places where bonefish, permit, tarpon, and countless other species feed, reproduce, and find refuge is ultimately what protects the fishery itself.
The Turneffe Conservation Land Trust Agreement represents years of work and cooperation between conservation organizations, stakeholders, and the Government of Belize. More importantly, it provides permanent protections designed to ensure that one of the Caribbean's most remarkable marine environments remains intact for generations to come.
