Keep Your Abel Reel Performing Its Best

Follow the instructions for your specific reel. Abel provides model-specific care guidance because sealed-drag, click-pawl, and discontinued reel designs have different maintenance requirements.
Remove sand, salt, and grit after every use. Debris can collect around the spool, frame, screws, and other small openings, especially during saltwater trips.
Rinse the reel after fishing in saltwater. Abel recommends washing applicable models with warm, soapy freshwater after saltwater exposure.
Use a small, soft brush for tight areas. Gently clean around screws, holes, and other places where dried salt or debris can accumulate.
Shake out excess moisture. After rinsing or submerging the reel, give it several quick shakes to remove water trapped between the spool and frame or around the drag surface.
Allow the reel to dry completely. Do not place a wet reel directly into a case or travel bag.
Back off the drag before storage. On models with an adjustable drag, loosen the drag knob when the reel is not being used to release pressure on the main spring.
Store the reel in a protective case. Abel recommends protecting the reel whether it is stored separately or left attached to the rod.
