Fluorocarbon Leaders & Tippet

Fluorocarbon is a dense, abrasion-resistant polymer that is nearly invisible underwater. Unlike nylon (monofilament), fluorocarbon sinks faster, making it ideal for nymphing, streamer fishing, and saltwater fly fishing where stealth and durability are key.

Use fluorocarbon leaders and tippet anytime you want your fly to sink, when fishing in clear water with wary fish, or when abrasion resistance is important (such as around rocks, coral, or shell beds). Nylon is often better for dry flies because it floats more naturally.

Fluorocarbon has a light refraction index very close to that of water, which makes it less visible than nylon. While no material is truly “invisible,” fluorocarbon is far harder for fish to detect, especially in clear water or when targeting pressured fish.

Fluorocarbon leaders and tippet are generally more expensive because of their manufacturing process and advanced properties. Many anglers use nylon for general fishing and switch to fluorocarbon in technical or demanding situations where it can make a difference.

Fluorocarbon is stiffer and harder than nylon, so knots can slip if tied improperly. Always wet the knot before tightening.

Fluorocarbon is more resistant to UV damage and water absorption than nylon, so it typically lasts longer on the spool and in use. Properly stored, fluorocarbon can remain strong for years without degrading. It is essential to pack out all leader and tippet trash, but especially fluorocarbon as it can last for decades in an ecosystem.
