What does ‘Fishing Strength’ mean, and why does TroutHunter use it?
Most tippet manufacturers rate break strength by tensile strength — the force required to break the material when pulled straight, without knots. TroutHunter instead rates their tippet by Fishing Strength, defined as the resistance of the material with an overhand or wind knot to breaking under tension. In practice, a wind knot weakens fluorocarbon significantly at the knot point. By rating their tippet with a knot already present, TroutHunter’s stated strengths reflect what the tippet actually delivers during fishing rather than an idealized lab measurement.
What are the half sizes (3.5X, 4.5X, 5.5X, 6.5X) for?
The half sizes address the practical problem that standard X increments are sometimes too coarse a step for technical fishing. The 4X-to-5X gap is where this is felt most acutely: 4X is often too heavy for delicate presentations on clear, low water, but 5X is too light for the fish or fly size. The 4.5X sits between them in both diameter (0.0065") and strength (6.0 lb), giving a meaningful option without compromise. TroutHunter extended this logic across the range — the 3.5X, 5.5X, and 6.5X fill similar gaps for anglers who have found themselves splitting the difference in those X-size brackets.
What are the downsides of TroutHunter Fluorocarbon Tippet?
A few honest considerations. It is priced at the higher end of the fluorocarbon tippet market — noticeably more expensive per spool than RIO, SA, or Umpqua equivalents, though the 50m spool length partially offsets this. The Fishing Strength ratings are lower than the tensile strength ratings competitors use, which can make TroutHunter appear weaker in a side-by-side comparison — the ratings are actually more accurate, but buyers unfamiliar with the methodology may misread them. The range begins at 2X (no 0X or 1X), so anglers who primarily throw large streamers may need a different product for their heaviest setups.
