The Ultimate Baja Fly Fishing Destination: El Bahia de los Suenos - The Bay of Dreams
For years anglers have deserved a world-class lodge experience to match the exciting fly fishing for roosterfish opportunities in Baja’s East Cape. Now the wait is over with the Fly Fish Mex, El Bahia de los Suenos — The Bay of Dreams program. With miles of open and accessible coastline, the East Cape of Baja is arguably the world’s #1 place to catch roosterfish from the shore. This special lodge destination is set amongst the spectacular beaches and mountains of Bahia de los Suenos. Anglers and their non-angling companions and families can now enjoy first-class accommodations, guides skilled in guiding fly anglers, plenty of non-angling activities, and protected beaches. The fly fishing—and the guides here—are world-class for roosterfish, jack crevalle, dorado, billfish, tuna, and wahoo.
Fly fishing for roosterfish is the pinnacle of angling patience, fly-fishing ability, and resolving complex chaos theory. And it all finishes well in the angling world because each day ends with a sunset and a few cold cervesas.

General Information
Baja Mexico’s East Cape is one of the most productive blue water fly fishing locations in the world. Gentle seas, fair weather, and a precipitous nearby drop-off of the ocean floor make this the perfect setting for fly fishing. Add the incredible number of migrating pelagic and resident species and you have a recipe for some great fly fishing.
Fishing can be good year-round, but conditions are best for fly-fishing in May, June, July, and again in October. Once fair weather settles into the area come May, an abundance of bait attracts migrating species like roosterfish, jacks, dorado, billfish, tuna, and wahoo are abundant.
The fishing day begins and ends in front of the property. A normal fishing day starts with breakfast served at 5:30 AM in the restaurant or brought on board and enjoyed on the boat. The guides arrive on the beach at 6:00 AM and guests board pangas right in front of the villas.
Inshore fishing for roosterfish, jacks, ladyfish, giant needlefish, pompano, and a variety of other species cruise the beach in search of prey. When fishing from the beach it is a sight fishing game. Anglers walk the beach with the guide in search of cruising fish. When fish are spotted, anglers often run to get into casting position. It is a unique blend of sight-fishing, casting, walking, and chaos.
When fishing from the panga, live bait is often used to bring fish within casting range and the guides also use a teaser on a spinning rod. The action is fast and furious with a fly rod, requiring quick casts and fast retrieves.
Boats and Equipment
The local fishing vessel of choice throughout Baja Mexico is the panga. These 20-26 foot open boats are perfect not only for commercial use but for sport fishing as well. The open floor plan and lack of overhead obstruction make an excellent setup for fly fishing. The East Cape of Baja Mexico enjoys predominantly calm seas and calm conditions in the early spring, summer, and fall periods. It is not uncommon to encounter pelagic species, such as dorado, striped marlin, and tuna within a mile of shore. The conditions and topography present a unique opportunity to catch big fish from a small boat. The Pangas can seat 2-3 anglers and gear comfortably and are suitable for inshore or offshore outings.
For a beach fishing day, the fishing is on foot, covering distances in the sun and sand. We recommend using a hydration backpack system along with a few snacks, and fishing gear can be carried with you.
Footwear is subject to personal preference, but an important component. When fishing from a panga many anglers choose to go barefoot. But once on the beach, some anglers prefer wading boots because when it’s time to run to get into casting position they are not concerned about stepping on anything sharp.
