A High-End Eco-Lodge With a Little Something For Everyone

Less than a year after Francis and Eleanor Coppola acquired this beachside refuge in 2001, it was swept out to sea by the forces of Hurricane Iris. Turning disaster into triumph, the Coppolas led a two-year reclamation project, creating a magnificent resort that is consistently ranked among the best in Central and South America. With its friendly, attentive staff, two restaurants, a complete spa, and idyllic seafront setting, Turtle Inn is the perfect refuge for those seeking a stress-relieving getaway situated in an area that is home to some of the finest permit fishing in the world. This unique location also provides a wealth of exciting non-angling activities. The coral reef just offshore offers some of the best diving, snorkeling and sea kayaking in the world. Inland hikes to hidden lagoons, canoe trips up the Monkey River, Mayan ruins tours, or a short bicycle ride into the village of Placencia are also great options. This 25-room seafront hideaway combines a great location (for anglers and non-anglers alike) with a high degree of luxury and service.

Accomodation Details

Lodging Details
There are several accommodation options on the Turtle Inn property. The Garden View Cottages and Villas are located in the resort’s gardens, set a bit back from the sea. The Poolside and Seaview Cottages and the Seaview Villas all present spectacular views of the Caribbean Sea. The Seafront Cottages and Villas have all been carefully placed on a beautiful stretch of Caribbean Sea beachfront. All cottages and villas have private screened porches, spacious bathroom with Japanese bath, and private walled gardens with an outdoor shower. All rooms feature Balinese hand-carved doors and décor.

For guests seeking a higher degree of privacy and more space, the exclusive Balinese-inspired Family Pavilion is designed to maximize privacy and is located at the southern edge of the property, surrounded on three sides by a high-walled garden. There are two bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms and a third loft bedroom accessed by a bamboo ladder. The Pavilion features antique hand-carved wooden doorways and detailing, stone sculptures, artwork selected by Francis and Eleanor Coppola, and a private pool surrounded by a tropical walled garden. A full-time attendant is at your disposal to anticipate your every need at the Family Pavilion.

General Information
Placencia is perhaps best known for the large numbers of permit that inhabit the southern area’s huge chain of cayes and flats, most of which are about a 45-minute run from Turtle Inn. Surrounded on all sides by deep, blue water, these healthy sand and turtle grass flats are home to some of the largest permit found anywhere. Schools of bonefish can be found on some of the cayes for those anglers interested in a diversity of species. A number of the mangrove islands and mainland lagoons also hold good numbers of snook, as well as tarpon ranging in size from 10 to over 80 pounds.

This area of Southern Belize is blessed with a wide range of fishing contexts including extensive saltwater flats, mangrove islands, the largest Barrier Reef in the Western Hemisphere, and a plenitude of backcountry rivers, lagoons, and lakes. Yellow Dog has booked guides in the Placencia area for years. We will gladly arrange any number of guided fishing days to complement your stay at Turtle Inn. The guides with whom Yellow Dog works are experienced and professional locals.

Boats and Equipment
The guides in the Placencia area fish from 23-foot super pangas, boats that are ideal for both poling the flats and running over open water. Most boats have poling platforms and are designed for fly fishing, with spacious casting decks and clean interiors. Turtle Inn does not provide gear, equipment or flies, so it is recommended that guests bring all necessary equipment.
