Quick Overview

Fishing: OK

Fishing Window (best time to fish): Early Morning

Best Fishing Method: Dry Fly Fishing

2nd Best Method: Dry with Dropper

Hatches: Caddis, Nocturnal Stones, Ants, Hoppers

Fishing Restrictions: Hoot Owl (No fishing from 2PM to midnight) from the upper park boundary to Hebgen. Hoot Owl from 8-Mile FAS to Ennis Reservoir.

Conditions The upper is running at pretty standard flows and is nice and clear again. Fishing has been tough with the high sun and recent heat. The weather is expected to be hot for the rest of the week. Fishing has been ok in the morning with dry flies and smaller nymphs. Streamer fishing has been tough when the sun is high in the sky.

Current and Upcoming Hatches Stonefly nymphs, mayfly nymphs, and caddis nymphs are available to fish sub-surface. PMD's and Sallies can be found hatching around late morning into the afternoon daily. On calm, cloudy days, fish have been consistently rising to adult Caddis or PMD's in tailouts or small eddies. The dry fly action is usually best around $3 Bridge.

Caddis have been flying around the upper and fish have been pretty willing to eat them.

Nocturnal stones are out and about so a stonefly dry early in the morning can be effective.

Ants and Hoppers have been a good option as well.

Tactics and Tips Dry fly fishing has been OK daily with nice fish looking to eat caddis and Nocturnal Stones early in the morning. Ants and hoppers can be effective some days and slow on others. Smaller hoppers seem to be fishing better than really large patterns. A 9' 5x leader with a size #16 Caddis dry and a drag free drift should trick rising trout. It can still be worth cruising a Chubby or attractor dry fly on a 1x or 2x 7.5' leader. A mayfly nymph fished with a perdigon or a caddis nymph has been successful subsurface. Streamer fishing has just been OK. Smaller flies fished on cloudy days have found the most success. We have reached the point in the year when the bigger fish can be hard to find but the whiteys and small trout eat perdigons fairly well. A little cool weather will work magic for the fishing.
