Description
The GTR pushes the GT Series toward maximum power, built for anglers who demand precise, dependable performance in saltwater and heavy freshwater. It features the same fully sealed architecture and GTX-derived drag system as the GTS, but with a stronger spring and expanded drag range for a broader, more controlled power band at 8- and 9-weight.
Engineered to be stronger, lighter, and more responsive than the NV-G series it replaces, the GTR pairs a refined frame with a smooth, highly adjustable drag knob and seamless left- to right-hand retrieve conversion. Its 4.5” diameter and Giga arbor deliver fast line pickup and generous backing capacity, giving anglers the stopping power needed for bonefish, permit, and steelhead.
Designed as a versatile platform, the GTR can be paired with a 10/11 spool for larger species, offering one frame for multiple fisheries. Integrated backing markers and clear spool identification make rigging quick and precise. Built for guides and serious anglers, the GTR is engineered to perform without compromise.
Features
- Line-Class-Tuned Drag System. Drag behavior engineered specifically to the line weight, not a one-size-fits-all curve. Fully sealed and derived from the flagship GTX platform.
- GTS Drag (5 to 8 weight). Dual-turn system. First turn 0 to 4 pounds for 5 to 6 weight finesse. Second turn 4 to 12 pounds for 7 to 8 weight power.
- GTR Drag (8 to 11 weight). Single-turn system. Zero to 12 pounds in one full rotation. Reinforced spring and additional washer for added power.
- Lightweight, Rigid Frame. Engineered for saltwater durability without the weight penalty.
- Integrated Backing Markers. Machined directly into the spool. Fill your line to the exact yardage without measuring.
- Giga Arbor Spool. Fast line pickup and faster drying.
- 24mm Socket-Compatible Spool Cap. Standard 15/16 inch socket removes a stuck cap cleanly.
- Easy RH to LH Conversion.
- Machined in Miami. Built to last.
The GT drag system is derived directly from the GTX Pentadrag architecture and scaled to the demands of each GT model. Where most drag systems are built for maximum stopping power, the GT is engineered for feel and control—delivering a precise, responsive drag curve that lets you apply exactly the pressure you want at any point in the fight. GTS models are staged for finesse and lighter line classes. GTR models run a stronger spring for a broader power band when the fish get bigger.

FAQ
Who is the Nautilus GTR for?
The Nautilus GTR is built for serious fly anglers who target powerful saltwater and heavy freshwater species — think permit on the flats, tarpon in the Keys, redfish along the Gulf Coast, or steelhead in the Pacific Northwest. It's the reel for anglers who won't compromise on drag performance, durability, or line pickup speed, and who want a single versatile platform that can handle both inshore saltwater and heavy freshwater applications without missing a beat.
What is the maximum drag on the Nautilus GTR?
The GTR delivers up to 12 pounds of drag in a single rotation of the drag knob, making it ideal for powerful saltwater species like tarpon, permit, and bonefish without overcomplicating the adjustment.
What is the GTR 8/9 best suited for?
The GTR 8/9 is ideal for bonefish, permit, redfish, snook, baby tarpon, and steelhead. It pairs best with 8- or 9-weight rods and holds up to WF9 + 200 yards of #30 Dacron backing.
What are the integrated backing markers on the spool?
Backing markers are machined crossbars directly into the spool that indicate the optimal backing fill level for your line weight. This allows for quick and accurate line loading without measuring or guesswork.
How does the Pentadrag braking system work?
The Pentadrag system uses three cork and carbon fiber surfaces plus two free-floating carbon fiber surfaces, topped with a Kevlar/carbon fiber hybrid precision plate. This multi-layer design distributes pressure evenly, insulates heat from friction, and delivers the consistently smooth drag Nautilus is known for.
Is the GTR 8/9 spool interchangeable with the GTR 10/11?
Yes. Both GTR models share the same 4.5" frame, meaning the 8/9 and 10/11 spools are cross-compatible — making it easy to carry an extra spool for a different line weight without purchasing a second reel.
