Description

The NYAP (short for Not Your Average Popper) is a no-nonsense surface fly designed specifically for giant trevally and other apex reef predators. Originally popularized in the Seychelles, the NYAP has earned a reputation as one of the most effective topwater patterns for provoking the brutal, crashing eats that GT anglers dream about.

The fly is built around a cylindrical section of dense foam tied to a heavy-duty saltwater hook, creating a durable, unsinkable head that pushes water aggressively. The foam is trimmed flat at the front to maximize splash and disturbance, while a sparse synthetic tail and flash provide just enough profile to suggest a fleeing baitfish. Unlike more elaborate poppers, the NYAP is simple, efficient, and almost indestructible—exactly what’s needed when casting to fish capable of destroying gear in seconds.

Fished with powerful, rod-lifting strips, the NYAP throws water and creates a loud, frothy commotion that giant trevally, bluefin trevally, and other reef hunters find impossible to ignore. Its straightforward construction and raw effectiveness have made it a must-carry pattern in destinations like the Seychelles, Christmas Island, Oman, and other GT strongholds.

The NYAP isn’t subtle—but that’s the point. It’s built for aggression, durability, and heart-stopping eats on the surface.

From Fulling Mill:

"Not Your Average Popper. Designed by Fulling Mill consultant James Christmas who has been a guide on Alphonse Island in the Seychelles. The NYAP is a must have in your fly box. This simple foam pattern has accounted for some whopping GT's, the world over. Made by affixing some basic foam onto a World Class hook, in this case it's the Gamakatsu SL12, you can be sure to rely on it. Whatever you do, don't buy a cheap alternative unless you want to lose the fish of a lifetime. Top tip from our friends at Fin Chaser Magazine, is to take a handful of these, as one hit from a GT will often destroy the foam body leaving you needing a few in reserve. Be sure to check out the Standard Nyap too."
