Description

RIO Gold fly lines first took flight in 2008 on the unforgiving waters of Idaho's Henry's Fork, and the Gold Standard of multipurpose fly lines has been transcending boundaries ever since. The Elite Gold XP is the most versatile taper in RIO's expanded Gold lineup -- built for anglers who fish subsurface flies just until the hatch pops, then turn to dries without switching spools.

A mid-length head and half-size-heavy design balance the ability to carry line at distance against quickly loading the rod for shorter casts, while a medium-long rear taper maintains line control both in the air and on the water while mending. A balanced body delivers enough power up front to turn over a wide range of rigs, with enough power in the rear to load rods deeply for short-to-mid-length shots. RIO's low-stretch ConnectCore Plus delivers sharp take detection and fast hook sets, while SlickCast coating -- the slickest, most durable finish RIO has measured -- keeps the line shooting cleanly through the guides all season.

Features

•    Half-Size Heavy, Mid-Length Head — Balances carrying line at distance against quick loading for short casts.
•    Medium-Long Rear Taper — Maintains line control for longer presentations, casting and mending alike.
•    Balanced Body — Power up front to turn over rigs, power in the rear to load the rod deeply.
•    Mid-Length Front Taper — Turns over heavier rigs on short leaders or presents small dries with finesse on long ones.
•    ConnectCore Plus — RIO's low-stretch core for sharp take detection and fast, direct hook sets.
•    SlickCast Coating — The lowest-friction, most durable finish RIO has measured.
•    Welded Loops, Front and Rear — Fast, secure connections to backing and leader.

Rod Pairing

Rod Action Pairing Notes
Medium-Fast Action Ideal The half-size heavy, mid-length head matches a medium-fast blank for balanced loading at any distance.
Fast Action Works Well Loads quickly and shoots well; slightly less delicate on close, technical presentations.
Slow / Full-Flex Action Not Recommended The added weight can overload a soft blank, especially at short range.

FAQ

What are the parts of a fly line and what does each section do?
A weight-forward fly line has five sections: Running Line: The thin, level back section that shoots through guides. SlickCast coating keeps friction low for long, easy casts. Rear Taper: The medium-long transition from running line to belly, which is what gives Gold XP its line control on longer presentations, both in the air and on the water while mending. Belly (Head): The thickest section -- a mid-length head that grows from 40 feet on the WF3 to 45 feet on the WF8, built half a line size heavy for balanced loading power. Front Taper: A mid-length taper shared with the classic RIO Gold, capable of turning over heavier rigs on short leaders or presenting small dries delicately on long ones. Tip: The final section where the leader connects, finished with a welded loop for a fast, secure connection.

How does Gold XP compare to Classic RIO Gold and Gold MAX?
RIO's expanded Gold Series now spans three distinct classes, all sharing the same core DNA but tuned to different payloads: Classic RIO Gold: True-to-weight with a longer 47-foot head and back taper, prioritizing loop stability and delicate delivery at medium-to-long range -- the choice for distance mends and finesse presentations. Gold XP (reviewed here): Half a size heavy with a mid-length head, striking a balance between line control at distance and the power to turn over indicators and heavier nymph rigs -- RIO's most versatile all-around trout taper. Gold MAX: A full size heavy with the shortest head in the family, purpose-built to smoothly load and turn over the biggest, bulkiest rigs and roll-cast heavier payloads with ease. Choose Gold XP when you want one line that handles dry droppers, indicator nymphing, and the occasional streamer without changing spools. Choose Classic Gold for pure finesse and distance, or Gold MAX when the flies get genuinely heavy.

What is SlickCast and how does it hold up over a season?
SlickCast is RIO's proprietary coating technology, engineered to be the slickest and most durable finish the company has measured. In practice, that means less resistance through the guides for longer, easier casts, plus a coating that holds up to repeated use rather than degrading and getting sticky partway through the season.

Is this the most versatile of all the Gold lines?
Line weight and head length work against each other: more weight up front loads a rod faster and turns over bigger rigs, but too much too soon sacrifices the delicate touch dry-fly fishing demands. Gold XP splits the difference -- a medium-long rear taper keeps line control solid at distance, both casting and mending, while the added half-size of weight up front is enough to turn over indicators and moderately heavy nymph rigs without requiring the longer casting stroke a true-to-weight line needs. That balance is what lets one line move between dry-dropper, indicator, and light streamer work in the same day.
