- Medium-stiff material for turning over large, weighted flies
- Easy knotting, high strength leader
- Hand-tied perfection loop in the butt for quick rigging
Description
The RIO 12' Permit Leader is medium-stiff nylon, built specifically for permit fishing — not adapted from a general saltwater leader design, but purpose-built for the weight, length, and butt-section power that turning over crab and shrimp patterns in windy conditions demands.
The powerful butt section carries energy through the full leader length and delivers the fly accurately even in the 15–25 mph trade winds common on permit destinations in Belize, Mexico, and the Florida Keys. Medium-stiff nylon is easy to knot in the field, resists coil memory, and produces reliable knot strength across all three tippet sizes.
Available in 12, 16, and 20 lb with a hand-tied perfection loop in the butt for fast rigging. It is the nylon counterpart to the RIO Fluoroflex Permit Leader — the right choice when suppleness, knotting ease, or cost are priorities.
Features
• Medium-Stiff Nylon — Butt-section power for turning over weighted crab and shrimp patterns in breezy tropical conditions. Easy to knot with high knot strength throughout the 12–20 lb range.
• 12-Foot Length — Provides additional distance between the fly line and fly, reducing line shadow and disturbance on spooky permit flats.
• Purpose-Built Permit Taper — Taper designed specifically for permit fishing, not a general saltwater leader adapted to the application.
• Hand-Tied Perfection Loop — Butt loop for fast loop-to-loop connection to the fly line.
• Available in 12, 16 & 20 lb — Three strengths covering pressured flats conditions through heavy crab patterns near structure.
• Nylon Construction — More supple than fluorocarbon; easier to knot; less expensive per leader than fluorocarbon equivalents.

FAQ
Why would I choose nylon over fluorocarbon for permit?
Nylon has three practical advantages over fluorocarbon for some permit situations. First, it is more supple and easier to knot. Second, in slightly off-color or windy conditions, the visibility difference between nylon and fluorocarbon is minimal and the knot quality matters more than the material. Third, nylon is noticeably less expensive per leader, which matters for anglers who go through multiple leaders in a day. Finally, if you're fishing floating crabs, nylon floats whereas fluoro sinks.
Why does permit fishing need a 12' leader?
Permit are acutely sensitive to anything unnatural above them, including the shadow and splash of a fly line landing nearby. A 12-foot leader puts the colored fly line further from the fly than a standard 9-foot leader, reducing the chance of line shadow alerting the fish before the fly enters the water. The extra length also gives the crab or shrimp pattern more room to land and sink naturally before the line lands, which is important for permit where the fly’s entry and initial drop frequently triggers the strike.
How does this leader perform in wind?
The medium-stiff butt section is specifically designed for the windy conditions common on permit destinations in Belize, Mexico, and the Florida Keys. The 12-foot leader is longer than a standard 9-foot leader, which can make it more challenging to cast cleanly in very heavy wind. If you are unable to turn the fly over due to heavy wind, consider shortening to 10 feet by cutting from the tippet end, or switch to 20 lb for the heavier butt that comes with the larger diameter.
