Why would I choose nylon over fluorocarbon for permit?
Nylon has three practical advantages over fluorocarbon for some permit situations. First, it is more supple and easier to knot. Second, in slightly off-color or windy conditions, the visibility difference between nylon and fluorocarbon is minimal and the knot quality matters more than the material. Third, nylon is noticeably less expensive per leader, which matters for anglers who go through multiple leaders in a day. Finally, if you're fishing floating crabs, nylon floats whereas fluoro sinks.

Why does permit fishing need a 12' leader?
Permit are acutely sensitive to anything unnatural above them, including the shadow and splash of a fly line landing nearby. A 12-foot leader puts the colored fly line further from the fly than a standard 9-foot leader, reducing the chance of line shadow alerting the fish before the fly enters the water.
