Description
If the standard RIO Powerflex is the most reliable trout leader in the world, the Powerflex Plus is what happens when RIO asks: what if it were 20% stronger?
The Powerflex Plus is built on the same proven taper design and high-performance butt section as the standard Powerflex, with one critical difference: a modified nylon copolymer formulation that produces a prodigious increase in tensile strength without compromising knot strength or suppleness. In real terms, that means 5X Powerflex Plus breaks at 6 lb instead of 5 lb, 3X at 9.5 lb instead of 8.5 lb, and 0X at 18 lb instead of 15.5 lb — all at the same diameter as the standard leader. Same presentation. More strength.
The Powerflex Plus earns its premium most clearly when the unexpected happens: a large brown trout takes a nymph on 4X, a steelhead hammers a streamer on 1X, or a fish of a lifetime rolls on your hopper. The extra margin that the Plus provides in those moments — the difference between a fish that makes it to the net and a story about the one that broke off — is exactly what it was designed for. Available in 0X through 7X in 7.5', 9', and 12' lengths, each with a hand-tied perfection loop in the butt section for fast rigging.
Features
• Up to 20% Stronger Than Standard Powerflex — Modified nylon copolymer formulation produces prodigious tensile strength increase at every X-size without changing diameter.
• Same Diameter as Standard Powerflex — Identical diameters across all X-sizes mean the same presentation characteristics with meaningfully more breaking strength.
• High Knot Strength — The increased tensile strength does not come at the cost of knot integrity — the Plus knots as easily and securely as the standard Powerflex.
• Supple Material — Soft, flexible copolymer delivers natural fly drift and delicate presentations across all X-sizes, matching the standard Powerflex for feel.
• High-Performance Taper — Same powerful butt section and precision taper as the standard Powerflex for unsurpassed turnover across all techniques and conditions.
• Hand-Tied Perfection Loop — Pre-tied loop in the butt for fast loop-to-loop connection to the fly line. No tools required.

FAQ
How is the Powerflex Plus different from the standard Powerflex?
The Powerflex Plus is up to 20% stronger than the standard Powerflex at the same diameter and X-size. For example, 5X Powerflex Plus breaks at 6 lb vs. 5 lb for the standard; 0X breaks at 18 lb vs. 15.5 lb. The diameters are identical across all X-sizes. Both use the same high-performance taper design and hand-tied perfection loop. The difference is purely in the copolymer formulation — RIO modified the nylon blend to increase tensile strength without reducing knot strength or suppleness.
Which X-size should I choose?
The same principles apply as the standard Powerflex: 0X–1X for streamers and heavy rigs; 2X–3X for larger flies and faster water; 3X–4X for general-purpose trout fishing; 4X–5X for standard dry fly and nymph presentations; 6X for spring creeks and technical fish; 7X for micro presentations on ultra-selective fish. The advantage of the Plus is that each X-size carries more strength — so if you’re on the fence between 4X and 5X, the Plus gives you 5X presentation with closer to 4X strength.
Does the extra strength change how the leader turns over or presents the fly?
No. RIO’s engineers specifically designed the Plus formulation to maintain the same suppleness and knot-tying characteristics as the standard Powerflex. The taper design is identical, so turnover behavior, wind penetration, and delicacy of presentation are the same. The strength increase comes purely from the material’s improved tensile properties, not from a change in stiffness or diameter.
Can I add fluorocarbon tippet to this leader?
Yes — many anglers extend the Powerflex Plus with 18–24 inches of RIO Fluoroflex Strong fluorocarbon tippet using a Double Surgeon’s Knot. This adds stealth in clear water and improves sink rate for nymphs. The Plus’s stronger base material also means the nylon-to-fluorocarbon junction is less likely to be the weak point in the system, which is a meaningful practical advantage when you’re fishing large fish on fine tippets.
Is the Powerflex Plus worth the extra cost over the standard Powerflex?
If you're targeting trophy fish or fishing in situations where an unexpected large fish is a genuine possibility, then definitely. If this is not the case, the standard Powerflex is a reliable option.
