Which wire strength should I choose?
20 lb wire: The lightest option, paired with a 20 lb class taper. Appropriate for species where a lighter presentation is possible — barracuda in clear shallow water, bluefish, ladyfish, and smaller pike. The lighter wire is slightly more supple and casts more naturally with smaller flies. 30 lb wire: The mid-range option, paired with a 30 lb class taper. Appropriate for larger pike, musky, bigger barracuda, and wahoo. The heavier class taper handles larger, more air-resistant flies. 45 lb wire: The heaviest option, also paired with a 30 lb class taper. For the largest pike and musky, heavy wahoo applications, and larger sharks where maximum bite resistance is required. The 45 lb wire provides more abrasion resistance against rough mouths and gill plates in addition to cut resistance.
Can I re-use the leader after the wire section is damaged?
The nylon taper and Micro Swivel are typically reusable across multiple wire sections. If the wire bite tippet is cut, kinked, or shows abrasion damage, cut it above the damage point and retie or re-rig the wire section using a Haywire Twist. RIO sells knottable wire bite tippet separately, which allows replacing only the terminal wire section rather than the full leader.
