Tips for Dealing with Flight Delays: The 1-3-1 Method

January 22, 25

The 1-3-1 rule is a practical strategy developed by Scott Keyes, founder of the flight-deals app Going, to help travelers quickly navigate flight disruptions like cancellations or delays. We all know that flight delays and disruptions – be it weather-related, mechanical or something else – can wreak havoc on fishing travel, so when the unexpected does occur, it is good to have a plan and a process!

This method emphasizes being proactive, informed, and efficient to secure a replacement flight as quickly as possible. Here’s what the rule entails:

  1. Stay informed with one travel app: Use reliable tools like Flighty or FlightAware to receive real-time updates on flight statuses, delays, and gate changes. Acting quickly when disruptions occur can secure you a seat on alternative flights before they fill up.

  2. Triple your contact methods: When faced with a disruption, simultaneously reach out to the airline via three channels, as multitasking across these channels increases your chances of rebooking faster.
    • In person at the airport.
    • Through the airline’s app, website, or social media accounts.
    • By calling customer service.

  3. Leverage the U.S. Department of Transportation Dashboard: This federal resource outlines passenger rights and airline obligations, including compensation, refunds, and accommodations during disruptions. Use it to understand your entitlements and hold airlines accountable.

Why It Works

The 1-3-1 rule is effective because it combines speed with a multi-channel approach, ensuring travelers maximize their chances of securing a new flight. Keyes emphasizes that acting immediately — by lining up at a gate agent while simultaneously rebooking through an app or calling customer service — can dramatically reduce wait times and prevent extended delays.

Additional Travel Tips

Keyes also suggests strategies to minimize travel disruptions, such as flying early in the day, avoiding major holiday periods, choosing larger airports with more rebooking options, and traveling with carry-on luggage to avoid baggage delays. By using the 1-3-1 rule and these complementary tips, travelers can better navigate unexpected disruptions and enjoy smoother journeys.
