JAMIE AND JEAN DEARN ON ARGENTINA
From Jamie and Jean Dearn: “I have dreamed of visiting Argentina for a very long time. Over the years, I have seen Yellow Dog Flyfishing Adventures in magazines and spoken to representatives at various shows. After a few failed attempts to coordinate plans to stay and fish, I finally called them up.
I am sure glad I did! I was put in touch right away with John Hudgens, a South America specialist. He was able to put together a 10 day itinerary on various rivers and lakes with first class accommodations. We started out on two lakes from our first base town of San Martin De Los Andes — Lagos Lolog and Lacar.
We fished both lakes with big dries, but ultimately our fishing success came with sinking lines and either minnow or crawfish patterns blind casting to the bank and stripping back in. We then moved on and explored three rivers: Rio Chimehuin, Rio Collon Cura and then the mighty Rio Limay. We had success with San Juan Worms as a dropper, minnows of various sizes and colors, small Mayfly spinners and big Chubby Chernobyls.
Our rods of choice were 6-weights for the bigger dries and sinking lines, and at times a 7-weight due to the wind. All of the fish were healthy and some of the strongest fighting fish I have ever encountered. It is hard to say which one was my favorite because they were all in my opinion world-class fly-fishing rivers. This was our first trip to South America.
We found the culture to be very easygoing and all of the locals very polite and willing to help us in every aspect We really enjoyed shopping and trying the local cuisine at both restaurants in town and at all of our overnight stays in the lodges and camp out on the river.
The asado was probably the best I have ever had. I cannot wait to return to Patagonia and fish again! I would like to thank the entire Yellow Dog Team and Chocolate Lab Expeditions in Argentina for arranging a trip for us that included seamless transitions between lodges, an excellent guide for our eight days, exquisite meals, and kind, very memorable hosts.
