In addition to the area’s healthy tarpon fishery, there are also great permit opportunities in the waters close to Caye Caulker. Permit are found throughout the area, especially during the spring and early summer months.
Measures to enhance protection of the species have rapidly evolved this permit fishery. In conjunction with solid conservation efforts, the guides of Caye Caulker continue to hone their skills with regard to permit fishing. While initially a tarpon-focused destination, the Caye Caulker fishing “mindset” has definitely shifted more to permit in recent years.
The permit fishing in this area is not like Southern Belize, where fish are oftentimes found in the super-shallow waters that are fished according to the tides. In the Caye Caulker area, permit are usually found in three to six feet of water, cruising and feeding over a variety of different bottoms including shallow grass, hard crunchy bottoms, and even submerged rock structures and caves. And while a moving tide is important, it is definitely not as crucial as it is in other areas.
