HELP PROTECT THE BAHAMAS
! SIGN THEÂ TWO PETITIONS !
National Park & Protection Petitions
Abaco & Grand Bahama, Bahama Islands
Please take a few minutes to sign both of these petitions to protect the flats, creeks, and inland lakes of Abaco and Grand Bahama. There are serious threats to these areas from resort development, dredging, and mining. These mangroves, creeks, and inland water systems are vital to the life cycle of juvenile bonefish and tarpon.
Two weeks ago I was on both Grand Bahama and Abaco during a bonefish spawning cycle, and it was amazing to see the sheer amount of fish congregating on the edges of the flats for pre-spawn. These critical environments are where these fish can grow without much threat from predator species, thus increasing the overall population of numerous species of fish besides bones and tarpon
Besides the obvious protections to the ecosystem, the economic impact of anglers traveling to these islands is substantial for Bahamians. Traveling anglers bring in approximately 141 million dollars annually to the Bahamas. These fish and these dollars employ fishing guides, lodge staff, and the trickledown economics runs deep throughout the economy of the islands. It’s critical to the remote areas that have no other source of incomeÂ
We all must be proactive in conservation and protect the Bahamas.Â
