LATE JANUARY | LOS ROQUES, VENEZUELA | GRAND SLAM IN 2.5 HOURS
There is no picture of the tarpon, but it happened. Here’s the description: "The experience was like none I ever had or, for that matter, ever imagined I would have. We left the dock around 8 AM.I got a permit on a 9-wt and a shrimp pattern around 8:30 AM on my first cast of the day from a feeding school of about a dozen permit. About 10 minutes later, we headed to another flat and had a bonefish on the line. We then went back to Los Roques harbor where juvenile tarpon were rolling all around the boat.
I cast for about 10 minutes and hooked up. It took about 20 minutes--until 11:30AM or so--to boat the 20 lb. tarpon and complete the grand slam. I was, and still am, in a state of total shock realizing that my quotient of 'luck' for the remainder of my fishing life is now totally exhausted. Oh well."
