PUERTO RICO TARPON n’ SNOOK CLIENT REPORT

Opened in June of 2011, Tarpon Nest Lodge is the only fishing-focused lodge in Puerto Rico. The Lodge and the fishing program is operated by Captain Omar, the first tarpon outfitter on the island and arguably the most experienced guide in the region.

The Lodge sits on the shores of the intricate lagoon system that winds around the city of San Juan in a location that is fairly close to the international airport. Most of the tarpon in this area are resident fish, with some migratory fish entering the system in the late spring and summer months. One of the things that makes this fishery great is the sheer number of tarpon that are available to anglers throughout the year.

There are very few productive tarpon fisheries that can claim year-round action in shallow water. For anglers looking for a bit of diversity, it is also possible to combo a tarpon trip with offshore fishing for billfish, wahoo, dorado, and tuna. The Lodge itself is very clean, the rooms are spacious, and the gated grounds feature a small swimming pool and large outdoor deck area. Here is an update from a Yellow Dog client who recently fished Puerto Rico. Check out the nice tarpon!

First and foremost Capt Omar is one of those great guides with a passion & infectious enthusiasm for his fishing and the environment. He worked non-stop to get me on fish and even though we could not get a tarpon to hit a fly (which he explained ahead of the trip might be difficult). I ended up hooking 4 and landing 2 on light tackle plus a snook on the fly. Highly recommend him to anyone headed to Puerto Rico.

Thanks again for your help and look forward to choosing Yellow Dog once again for future trips.
