U.S. AND CUBA RELATIONS: BUSINESS AND FLIGHT UPDATES

May 03, 23
U.S. AND CUBA RELATIONS MORPHING

More news in the ongoing saga regarding scheduled air services between the United States and Cuba. On February 16, the U.S. announced it had officially signed an agreement with Cuba to re-establish scheduled air services, the same agreement that was reached — but not signed — in December.

According to a recent CNN article, U.S. carriers have a 15-day window — starting February 16 — to submit applications to the Department of Transportation for routes they would like to fly between the two countries.

The bidding process is expected to last until mid-March. It’s another step closer to easier flights to some of our favorite saltwater fishing, and the arrangement does not alter existing charter services. It was also announced President Obama will travel to Cuba within the coming weeks, marking the first visit to the island nation by a sitting U.S. president in 88 years.

Talks on expanding trade with Cuba are also ongoing, hopefully promising a brighter future for both countries. Read more about the trade talks in a recent New York Times piece here.
