Leonard Flemming recently wrote a travelogue for the South African fly-fishing website, Feathers and Fluoro, about his visit to Wyoming’s Wind River Canyon. The essay was accompanied by images from Yellow Dog Founder and Director of Operations, Jim Klug. Leonard notes, “The large browns are complimented by impressive numbers of heavy and colourful rainbows.
The white-water sections between the trout fishing adds to the excitement of these trips. Along with the Canyon, guests can also float sections of the Bighorn River, above and below the town of Thermopolis, as well as the Upper Big Wind at Crowheart.” Read the full piece on the Feathers and Fluoro website here.
Wind River Canyon Lodge is one of our favorite Western destinations. As a 100% Native American-owned company operating since 1992, Wind River Canyon Whitewater and Fly Fishing, located in Thermopolis, Wyoming, has long been home to the most seasoned, professional guide staff in the area.
Darren and his team are the only commercial operation allowed to guide the Wind River Canyon on the Reservation, which essentially means that when you fish with them, you have an entire river all to yourself within the Canyon sections. Since their focus has always been on conservation and resource protection, they fish the Wind River Canyon in two stretches, dividing the trips into upper and lower floats, and placing a daily limit of one guided boat per section / per day.
This is an amazing tailwater fishery that offers some of the best wild brown trout fishing in the United States complimented by impressive numbers of hot and heavy rainbows. There are also a number of great whitewater sections on these floats, which adds to the overall excitement of each trip! Opening back in the spring of 2015, Darren’s new lodge is located directly on the banks of the Wind River in the middle of the Canyon, equidistant between the upper and lower Canyon float.
A great option for small groups, the new lodge can accommodate a maximum of six to eight anglers at a time. The prime location of the new lodge means that two anglers can fish all day on the upper section, stepping out of the boat at the end of the day into the backyard of the lodge.
The next morning, anglers can step back into the boats to continue the float on the lower section. Comfortable rooms, delicious home-style meals, and all-inclusive packages make this a fantastic option with the added bonus of the largest trout found anywhere in the Rockies! This is a smaller occupancy lodge and does book quickly; we highly advise planning your trip well in advance.
