Private Island Experience With Flats Fishing Fishing Opportunities
A private island experience offering a relaxed atmosphere and attentive staff combined with an elite team of guides. Thatch Caye is located in southern Belize off the coast of Dangriga in the heart of the South Water Caye Marine Reserve. Catering to anglers and non-anglers alike, Thatch Caye and the Blue Horizon guide team provide world-class flats fishing right from your door in addition to a wide variety of non-angling activities offered daily. For anglers, Thatch Caye offers a great opportunity to target permit throughout the endless flats of the South Water Caye Marine Reserve. The island’s ideal location offers direct access to a large number of our black sickle-tailed friends in addition to some opportunities for bonefish and tarpon however, the primary focus of the guides and fishery is permit. Thatch Caye offers comfortable island accommodations, great service, a laid-back attitude, and the opportunity to fish with a senior guide staff created by Lincoln Westby.Â
Accommodation Details
Lodging Details
Thatch Caye offers three different types of accommodations with over the water bungalows, an over the water villa, and island cabanas. All accommodations are comfortable, well-appointed, and provide great views while welcoming the ocean breeze. Here at Yellow Dog, our personal favorite are the over the water bungalows. There is something about falling asleep and waking up to the sound of water and enjoying the 180-degree views provided by these accommodations. It is not uncommon to look out and see a school of bonefish or even a tailing permit on the Indy Beach flat. All accommodations are fully air-conditioned with a private patio or roof deck, as well as hammocks for relaxing with a cold Belikin or catching up after a long day on the water.
Food and Beverages
All meals are included in your package and prepared by great local chefs during your stay at Thatch Caye. Thatch Caye uses the freshest possible ingredients and strives to provide an authentic Belizean culinary experience. From freshly cooked fish to wonderfully done pork, you will enjoy every meal prepared by the wonderful kitchen staff. If you have any dietary restrictions or preferences, do not worry, Thatch Caye is 100% committed to providing alternatives for those with allergies or other food preferences.
Breakfast is served in the Coco Lounge from 7:00 – 8:30 AM each morning. If you are heading out on the water they are happy to pack a breakfast to go. This allows you to take full advantage of fishing light and tides.
Lunch is served in the Grove from 12:30 – 1:30 PM each day. If you are on the water you have the option of coming in for lunch or having lunch packed so that you may stay out on the water throughout the entire day.
Dinner is served in the Grove family-style (weather permitting) each evening starting at 7:00 PM. The Grove is a wonderful venue to enjoy the ocean breeze, and family-style meals under the sun and stars.
Thatch Caye has two bars on the island, the Coco Lounge which is located in the main lodge and open until 10:00 PM daily and the main Starfish bar which is located over the water and is open from 1:00 PM until close (generally 10 PM). Cocktail hour takes place each evening at the Starfish Bar starting at 6:00 PM.

General Information
For those who want to focus specifically on permit on the fly, the waters of Southern Belize are arguably the finest. While other species are found throughout the area, it should be understood that the fishing around Thatch Caye and the South Water Caye Marine Reserve is known for permit. Most anglers who want to travel to this fishery should be focused on the great opportunities to target tailing permit. Thatch Caye has partnered with the guides from Blue Horizon, headed up by the famous Lincoln Westby. Mention this name in any circle of saltwater anglers and most will know him for his worldwide reputation as one of the all-time best permit guides. He has trained and built a guide staff with intense focus and determination when it comes to guiding. However, the team of guides at Blue Horizon is also great for new saltwater anglers with a willingness to teach and educate throughout each day on the water. There are opportunities to target bonefish, tarpon, and a wide variety of alternate species as well. If you are interested in permit fishing but want the possibility to fill time throughout the day with other species, let the guides from Blue Horizon know your expectations and they will make sure to do their best each and every day to provide as much diversity as possible. This destination is great for both permit-focused anglers as well as anglers looking for a unique island experience based in the heart of a large and very healthy fishery with diversity.
Boats and Equipment
Thatch Caye utilizes the guide staff from the famed Blue Horizon who operate out of 23-foot traditional pangas. These boats are ideal for poling the numerous flats within the fishery as well as running over open water. They offer plenty of space as well as a great vantage point for spotting fish while poling the flats of southern Belize. There is rental equipment available at Thatch Caye, however, we recommend all anglers bring their own equipment, flies, and terminal tackle. Thatch Caye does have a small fly/rental shop but it is always best to come completely prepared.

Yellow Dog Client Reviews
“I am a very experienced trout fisherman but never fished saltwater. I came to Belize intending to catch bonefish. Charlie and I went out on day one for a test drive. Cast to one Permit and decided to fish exclusively for Permit. Fished five days, three with Charlie and two with Marlon. Cast to 20 Permit, missed 18, hooked two, but failed to land them. Score: Permit 20 / Knievel 0. Loved every minute. Both guides were great! Hard-working, NEVER GAVE UP, and very knowledgeable about which flats to fish depending on the tides and water depth – extremely satisfied with their efforts, abilities, and encouragement.” –Â Kelly K.

“So great! We learned so much and saw so many permit! It was incredible.” – Chris R.

“Thatch Caye is the perfect honeymoon destination. The resort and island are beautiful and the service was phenomenal and personalized where it felt like you were the only guest on the island. We loved socializing with other couples during happy hour at the Starfish bar and during dinners. The guides were knowledgeable and we had shots at permit each day. Next time I will focus more on the fishing!” – Will T.
