Trip Overview
Hidden deep within southern Tanzania's Julius Nyerere National Park, Lake Nyerere is one of the most intriguing new freshwater fisheries to emerge in Africa in decades. The reservoir only finished filling in 2024, flooding an immense landscape of old river channels, forest, rocky shorelines, bays, points, and submerged timber. FlyCastaway's first exploratory trip revealed extraordinary numbers of Tanzanian tigerfish, including fish to 16.5 pounds and sightings of substantially larger fish. Beginning in July 2027, anglers will be able to experience the fishery from a purpose-built East African-style safari camp on the Great Ruaha arm of the lake. It is a rare chance to fish a young, minimally pressured system while it is still being explored and understood.

Lodging Details
Camp FlyCastaway - Lake Nyerere is being built on a wooded peninsula along the western shore of the Great Ruaha arm of the lake. Ancient miombo woodland surrounds the property, while the peninsula's position gives each guest tent its own outlook over the water.

The camp will feature ten contemporary safari-style guest tents raised on wooden decks. Each standard tent measures approximately 8 x 4.5 meters and includes an ensuite bathroom with shower, toilet, and basin. King-size beds can be converted into two singles, and rooms include a side table and chair, dressing table, and storage for clothing and luggage.

A single Presidential Unit provides an upgraded option. Unlike the canvas guest tents, it is a permanent structure with insulated walls, double-glazed windows, air conditioning, a large private deck, and an ensuite bathroom with a bath, indoor shower, toilet, basin, and private outdoor shower.

At the center of camp is a large main lodge with dining, lounge, and bar areas overlooking Lake Nyerere. A dedicated mudroom beside the jetty provides individual tackle cubicles, rigging stations, fishing-supply storage, and a place to safely store rods between sessions. The camp is designed to operate largely on solar power and will have its own water-filtration and storage systems.

Food and Beverages
All meals, soft drinks, and local beers are included. Fishing days generally begin early with coffee and a light snack before the morning session. Depending on the day's fishing plan, lunch may be served back at camp or taken on the water. Evenings center around the main lodge, where guests can have a drink, eat dinner, and unwind after the day's fishing. Spirits and wine are not included in the package.

Typical Length of Stay
The standard program is seven nights at camp with six full fishing days. Guests arrive in Dar es Salaam one day before the scheduled start date and overnight independently. The following morning, the group flies by private charter to Lake Nyerere and transfers by road to camp. The arrival day is used for settling in, lunch, a fishing briefing, and tackle setup before six consecutive fishing days.

Non-Angling Activities and Options
Lake Nyerere sits inside Julius Nyerere National Park, placing guests in the middle of a remarkable East African wilderness. Hippos and Nile crocodiles inhabit the lake, Fish Eagles are common, and the surrounding bush supports lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, zebra, sable, African wild dog, and numerous other species. Four of Africa's Big Five occur in the area, and the camp itself is unfenced.

This remains a fishing-first program rather than a traditional safari itinerary, but game drives can be arranged for guests willing to give up a fishing session. The road transfer between the airstrip and camp also doubles as an informal game drive through the park.

Internet / Communications
Wi-Fi will be available at camp for the inaugural 2027 season. Connectivity will initially be centered around the main lodge, including the lounge, dining, and bar areas. Wi-Fi is not currently expected to be available in individual guest tents during the first season.

How to Get There
Guests fly internationally into Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, arriving one day before the scheduled start of the trip. A pre-trip hotel night and local transfers in Dar es Salaam are not included. FlyCastaway recommends the Blue Sapphire Hotel as a simple option near the airport, while the Sea Cliff Hotel offers a more upscale alternative farther away.

On the scheduled start date, the group meets at Julius Nyerere International Airport for a private charter flight aboard a Cessna 208 Caravan to a dirt airstrip near Lake Nyerere. The flight is approximately 45 minutes to one hour. From the airstrip, guests transfer by safari vehicle to camp, a drive of roughly 30 minutes to one hour depending on road conditions and wildlife sightings.

Arrival and Departure Details / Times

• Tuesday: Arrive at Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) and overnight at a hotel of your choice in Dar es Salaam. Hotel accommodations and local transfers are not included.
• Wednesday - Arrival at Camp: Meet the group at Julius Nyerere International Airport for the charter flight to the airstrip near Lake Nyerere. Transfer by road to camp, settle into accommodations, have lunch, and meet the FlyCastaway guide team for a fishing briefing and tackle setup. The remainder of the day is spent relaxing in camp.
• Thursday through Tuesday: Six full fishing days.
• Wednesday - Departure: Depart camp early for the road transfer to the airstrip and charter flight back to Dar es Salaam. Post-trip accommodations in Dar es Salaam are not included.

Documents Required
A valid passport and the appropriate Tanzanian entry visa are required for travelers who are not visa-exempt. Tanzania Immigration currently requires passports used for a visa application to have at least six months of validity and at least one unused visa page. Visitors must also be prepared to show a return ticket on arrival. U.S. passport holders traveling for tourism are currently required to obtain a Multiple Visa; other nationalities should confirm the visa category that applies to them. Tanzania Immigration recommends applying through its official online visa system.

Entry requirements can change, and requirements may vary by nationality and travel history. Guests should confirm current passport, visa, vaccination, and health-entry requirements well before departure.

General Information
Lake Nyerere is one of Africa's newest large freshwater lakes, created by the impoundment of the Rufiji River at Stiegler's Gorge as part of the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project. The reservoir finished filling in 2024 and now covers roughly 1,200 to 1,500 square kilometers depending on water level. Upstream, the lake spreads through a complex landscape of flooded forest, former river channels, bays, points, rocky shorelines, and submerged timber.

The primary target is the Tanzanian tigerfish (Hydrocynus tanzaniae), sometimes called the blue tigerfish. This genetically distinct species occurs naturally in Tanzania's Rufiji, Ruaha, and Ruvu river systems and is known for its remarkable coloration, speed, sharp teeth, and aggressive predatory behavior.

FlyCastaway's July 2026 exploratory trip provided the first real look at the lake's potential. Anglers encountered large concentrations of tigerfish, commonly finding fish in the 8- to 12-pound range, landing fish to 16.5 pounds, and seeing substantially larger fish. At times, entire packs followed hooked fish to the boat. Other fish were sight-cast to in approximately two feet of water, and feeding tigers were observed attacking bait around flooded timber.

One of the fishery's most unusual attributes is its water clarity. As the Great Ruaha and Rufiji Rivers enter the reservoir, their flow slows and suspended sediment settles, creating clearer water than anglers encounter in many traditional African tigerfish rivers. This can make the fishing unusually visual, with opportunities to see fish track and eat flies.

The fishery is still being learned, but the most consistent exploratory approach involved casting large streamers on 9-weight rods with Type 3 to 300-grain sinking lines while prospecting submerged timber, rocky shelves, shorelines, and other structure. Surface fishing can also be exceptional when tigerfish push bait upward, making a second 9-weight with a floating line and surface fly worthwhile.

Fishing days are built around low-light periods. Guests typically rise around 6:00 AM for coffee and a light snack before heading onto the lake. Lunch may be taken on the water or back at camp, followed by an afternoon session that generally runs through late afternoon or last light.

The inaugural 2027 season runs for twelve weeks, from July 14 through October 6. Longer term, the operation expects the core season to fall somewhere within Tanzania's dry-season window from roughly June through November, although FlyCastaway expects it will take several seasons to fully understand the lake's seasonal patterns.

Boats and Equipment
The lodge plans to operate six aluminum fishing boats approximately 18 to 20 feet in length, powered by 70- to 100-horsepower four-stroke outboards. Final specifications are still being refined, but the boats are being selected around stable casting platforms, onboard storage, rough-water capability, electric trolling-motor compatibility, safety equipment, cold-drink storage, foam decking, and depth finders.

A 210-square-meter floating jetty with drive-on docks will provide secure storage and easy boarding. Because the structure floats, it will rise and fall with changes in lake level.

For tackle, 9-weight fly rods are the primary recommendation based on exploratory fishing. Type 3 to 300-grain sinking lines paired with large streamers produced the most consistent results, while a second 9-weight with a floating line and surface flies is useful when tigerfish begin feeding on top. Tackle and flies are not included in the package. A detailed tackle and gear list is provided to confirmed guests.

Remember that Yellow Dog’s services are completely free! When you book a trip with Yellow Dog, you never pay more than when you book directly with the lodge or outfitter. All prices listed below are per person, based on double or single occupancy, and quoted in US dollars. 

2027 Rates:

Lake Nyerere Tigerfishing (Tanzania)
For the inaugural 2027 season, bookings made through November 30, 2026 will require an initial $1,000 deposit to secure the reservation. This temporary deposit structure will remain in place until the outfitter confirms the lodge is on schedule to open for the season in mid-July 2027.

Once that confirmation is made, guests will be asked to pay the remaining amount necessary to bring their deposit to the standard 50% of the trip total.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS – CANCELLATIONS
A non-refundable deposit of 50% per person is due at the time of booking for all trip packages and reservations, and final payment is due 90 days prior to arrival. All trip cancellations must be received in writing, sent to Yellow Dog Flyfishing Adventures, LLC. For all Yellow Dog Flyfishing Adventures, L.L.C. (YDFA) African Waters fishing packages, both deposits and final payments are non-refundable. If a cancelled package is resold by either the lodge/operator or by Yellow Dog Flyfishing Adventures, then a full refund will be sent minus a 10% per person cancellation fee charged by the outfitter and a $100.00 per person cancellation fee from Yellow Dog Flyfishing. In the case of cancellation by the client, both deposit and final payment may be transferred to another guest or angler for those same (original) dates if facilitated and arranged by the client. If no replacement is found, the following cancellation terms will apply:

For cancellations outside of 180 days from the start of trip date, a 90% credit (minus a $100.00 per person Yellow Dog cancellation fee) will be issued for a trip to be rescheduled within one year from original trip date.

For cancellations made 179 to 90 days from the start of trip date, a 50% credit (minus a $100.00 per person Yellow Dog cancellation fee) will be issued for a trip to be rescheduled within one year from original trip date.

For cancellations inside of 90 days from arrival date, all payments will be forfeited, and no credit will be issued.

Yellow Dog Flyfishing strongly recommends that anglers and guests purchase travel insurance for your trip. No refunds will be given for services, activities or accommodations voluntarily not participated in by the guest. This is the clients’ own responsibility and should be arranged in your country of origin, when you first book your African Waters trip and itinerary. It is mandatory that all clients have adequate medical insurance that includes medical evacuation from point of injury. We strongly recommend you obtain this through Global Rescue, who are world leaders and are strongly linked with the fishing travel industry. African Waters, its agents and affiliates, take no responsibility for change in international and local flight schedules. At time of quote, all flight charges, island fees and government taxes are correct but nonetheless are subject to change without prior notice. Client bookings are accepted on the understanding by the client that all tours are of an adventurous nature and involve an element of personal risk which is an inherent part of international travel. Clients undertake all tours entirely at their own risk and while African Waters takes every precaution to ensure the safety of clients, Yellow Dog accepts no responsibility for any death, injury or loss which might occur to such clients, sustained from any cause whatsoever. Please be aware that all guests will be required to sign and return the African Waters Indemnity Form prior to the trip, and there will be no exceptions to this. Receipt of deposit and/or final payment is acknowledgment that registrant has read and accepts the deposit, cancellation, refund and responsibility clauses for these African Waters packages.

Payment Terms for All Yellow Dog Trip Bookings:
Unless otherwise noted on your invoice, full payment is required for trips departing within 90 days of booking. For trips departing more than 90 days from booking, a 50% deposit is required to confirm your reservation.
