Yellow Dog’s Jake Wells and Jess McGlothlin recently returned from a five-day backcountry pack trip with Absaroka Beartooth Outfitters, based outside of Big Timber, Montana.
The trip consisted of a 16-mile horseback ride into the Absaroka Beartooth Wilderness, three days of fishing for virtually untouched native cutthroat trout on Hellroaring Creek, and then doing the same ride out on the final day. Each day of fishing was spent walking and wading either above or below camp on Hellroaring Creek.
Every emerald-green-colored pool or undercut bank contained smaller sized cutthroats that would not hesitate to come up and eat the dry fly. In between the riding and fishing, time was spent in the comfortable base camp eating hearty meals, telling stories & jokes around the campfire, and playing a few rounds of horseshoes. This is the perfect trip for anyone (including families) wanting to experience the real Montana backcountry.
