Description

The RIO Elite Gold is RIO's classic all-around trout taper — the line most anglers picture when they picture a "trout line." A long head (46-50 feet depending on weight) and an even longer rear taper are built to carry line at distance, hold tight loops, and execute long, controlled mends without disturbing the drift. Where the Elite Gold XP and Elite Gold Max add extra grain weight to load faster or punch heavier flies, the standard Elite Gold stays at true-to-rating weight, keeping the delicate turnover that spooky, technical water demands.

A mid-length front taper is the balance point of the design: long enough to lay down small dries and light nymph rigs with real delicacy, but with enough taper rate to turn over dry-dropper combos and light indicator setups when conditions call for it. RIO's ConnectCore Plus low-stretch core improves sensitivity and hook-setting power over a standard core, while the SlickCast coating cuts friction through the guides for longer, easier casts and holds up over a full season of fishing. RIO's SureFire tri-color system marks the tip, the belly's loading point, and the running line, so anglers always know where the head is during the cast.

Features

•    Long Head & Back Taper — 46-50 feet depending on weight, with an extended rear taper for smooth mending and loop stability at distance.
•    Standard-Weight Design — True to line rating, unlike the overweighted Gold XP and Gold Max, preserving delicate presentation for technical water.
•    Mid-Length Front Taper — Turns over small dries and light nymph rigs with finesse, or dry-dropper and light indicator rigs when needed.
•    ConnectCore Plus Low-Stretch — Roughly 30% less stretch than a standard core for better sensitivity and faster, more positive hook sets.
•    SlickCast Coating — RIO's slickest, most durable coating; reduces friction for longer casts and resists cracking.
•    SureFire Tri-Color System — Marks the tip, loading sweet spot, and running line for a precise casting reference.
•    Easy ID Printed Marking — Taper and weight printed directly on the line, no sticky labels needed.
•    Welded Loops, Front and Rear — Fast, secure connections to backing and leader.

Rod Pairing

Rod Action Pairing Notes
Fast Action Works Loads well at distance, but needs more line out to fully load than the XP or Max.
Medium-Fast Action Ideal The classic pairing — long head and rear taper form smooth loops with easy mending.
Medium Action Works Well Long rear taper suits soft, delicate presentations; less punch at long range.

FAQ

What are the parts of a fly line and what does each section do?
A weight-forward fly line has five sections:  Running Line: The thin, level back section that shoots through guides. SlickCast's low friction keeps this line moving on long shots and easy pickups.  Rear Taper: The transition from running line to belly. The Elite Gold's rear taper is notably long — this is the defining feature of the "classic Gold" design, smoothing the loop during the cast and giving precise control when mending at distance.  Belly (Head): The thickest section, and where the line's grain weight lives. At 46-50 feet depending on weight, this head is long by design, letting the angler carry more line in the air for longer presentations.  Front Taper: The transition from belly to tip. A mid-length taper (5'6" on the WF5F) — long enough for a soft, accurate presentation, but with enough rate to turn over dry-dropper and light indicator rigs.  Tip: The final section where the leader connects, finished with a welded loop for a fast, secure connection.

How does the Elite Gold differ from the Premier Gold?
Both share the same classic long-head taper and RIO's SlickCast coating, but the difference is the core and the marking system:  Elite Gold: Built on ConnectCore Plus, a low-stretch core that improves sensitivity and hook-setting power, plus the three-color SureFire marking system and printed Easy ID.  Premier Gold: Built on a standard, regular-stretch core — it doesn't have ConnectCore Plus's added sensitivity, but the slight give in the line can help protect light tippets and delicate hook holds. It uses a simpler two-color DualTone system instead of SureFire.  Choose the Elite Gold for maximum sensitivity and the full casting-reference feature set. Choose the Premier Gold for the same taper and coating at a lower price point, with a bit more forgiveness on light tippet.

What is ConnectCore Plus and why does it matter?
ConnectCore Plus is RIO's low-stretch core technology, stretching roughly 30% less than a standard fly line core. That reduction in stretch means more of the energy from a hook-set travels directly to the fly rather than being absorbed by the line, producing faster, firmer hook sets and letting anglers feel even subtle takes. It also gives a more direct connection to the fly when mending or fighting a fish, and can be hand-stretched before fishing to remove memory coils from time on the reel.

How does the RIO Elite Gold compare to the RIO Elite Gold XP and RIO Elite Gold Max?
All three share the same ConnectCore Plus core, SlickCast coating, SureFire tri-color marking, and Easy ID printed labeling — the difference between them is head length and how much extra grain weight is built into that head:  Elite Gold: Standard weight, true to its line rating. The longest head of the three (46-50 feet) with an extended rear taper, built to carry line at distance and deliver small to medium dries (#2-#22) and light nymph rigs with real delicacy. Available 4-8 wt.

Elite Gold XP: Half-size heavy — roughly half a line weight more grain than standard, with a mid-length head. "XP" stands for Extra Power: it loads modern fast-action rods faster at shorter range and turns over dry-dropper rigs, light indicators, and small streamers more easily than the standard Gold, while still casting well at distance. Available 3-8 wt.

Elite Gold Max: A full line size heavy, with the shortest, most compact, rear-loaded head of the three. Built specifically for bulky, wind-resistant flies — streamers, double-nymph rigs under large indicators, foam attractors — where turnover power matters more than delicate presentation. Available 4-9 wt.  In short: choose the Gold for the most delicate presentation and the longest effective head length, the Gold XP as the versatile middle ground that still handles most techniques well, and the Gold Max when the job is turning over heavy or bulky flies with minimum effort.
