LIVE FROM THE FIELD: BELIZE RIVER LODGE, BELIZE

After a great visit out to Turneffe Atoll, it was time for us to head back to the mainland for the next stop of Yellow Dog's Belize tour with Belize River Lodge, the oldest fishing lodge and program in Belize. Originally opened in 1960, Belize River Lodge sits directly on the banks of the Belize River, giving it's fishing program access not only to the expansive flats around the Belize City mainland, but also the freshwater inlets and creeks of the area that are known for impressive tarpon and snook populations.

After a slow first two days due to a shifting cold front and massive rains, day three of our stay at Belize River Lodge proved to be one of the best fishing days of the tour yet, with tons of shots at snook, tarpon, and even a few bonefish to round out double inshore slams. The conditions were definitely considered "snooky weather", but the topwater action was insanely good, with aggressive takes in the mangroves, tarpon action on the flats and tailing bones in the afternoon.

Our guide Pedro fished us incredibly hard, and we ended the day back at the lodge well after sunset still in disbelief of the fishing experienced with the current weather conditions. With the help of Brent Dawson of Warpath Flies, we will not be heading to any saltwater destination in the future without his signature crease fly which proved to be the hot snook pattern for the fishery.

If you haven't checked out Warpath's selection of custom tied flies, be sure to do yourself a favor and do so before your next trip anywhere in the world. All in all, Belize River Lodge is a fantastic choice for anglers looking for a fishing focused operation, great history, hard working guides and a classic setting with very diverse fishing scenarios.

Thanks to the Belize River Lodge staff, guide phenom Pedro, and some Warpath hotness for making our visitation well worth it. Be sure to check out the Belize River Lodge page on the Yellow Dog website, and contact us today for more information on this great option.
