Catch The World's Largest Rainbow Trout
Located on the remote, southern coast of Jurassic Lake (Lake Strobel), the Estancia offers the chance to experience some of the largest rainbow trout in the world amidst rugged, untouched landscapes. In a part of Patagonia that is considered very distant and removed, this is the finest option for great guides, huge fish and very comfortable amenities.
Named for the small lake nearby, Estancia Laguna Verde is in the isolated Lake Strobel area in the province of Santa Cruz. This building is typical of a Patagonian estancia: a classic working ranch house that has been rebuilt into a comfortable and functional fishing lodge. Five double-occupancy bedrooms attach to the Main Lodge, each with a private bathroom and two single beds. The spacious living room overlooks Laguna Verde, a small lake that is loaded with fat rainbows and brown trout. The living room features a TV with satellite connection, a fully-stocked fly tying desk for guest use, and a great main bar. Electricity runs 24 hours a day via windmill generators backed up by fuel generators. Laundry service provided twice a week.

Estancia Laguna Verde offers a weekly “asado” (Argentine BBQ), famous Patagonian lamb, and the best international dishes. All meals are served with great wines from Mendoza and other parts of Argentina. Lunches each day are cooked and served hot on the shores of the lake while fishing with your guide.
Typical Length of Stay
Typical packages are 7 nights / 6 days of fishing, Saturday through Saturday.
Non-Angling Activities and Options
Estancia Laguna Verde is situated in a very remote part of Argentina and is a fishing-focused operation, but guests can also explore the wonderful landscapes and wildlife on the enormous ranch. The Estancia can also arrange short day tours to destinations like Cardiel and Pueyrredón Lake, Las Manos Cave, Pinturas, and the Santa Cruz River. This unique region of Patagonia also offers extraordinary bird watching and wildlife viewing opportunities.
Wi-Fi is available for guests. Cell phone service is not available.
How To Get There
We recommend that you fly from Buenos Aires’ Jorge Newbery Airport (AEP) to El Calafate Airport (FTE) in the province of Santa Cruz. El Calafate has a newly-built international airport, where more than 10 flights a day arrive and depart. There are direct flights to El Calafate from Buenos Aires, Bariloche, Rio Gallegos, Rio Grande and Ushuahia (Tierra del Fuego). The El Calafate airport is serviced by Aerolineas Argentinas and LAN Airlines.
Arrival and Departure Details / Times
When possible, we suggest that you arrive in El Calafate (FTE) the night before the start of your week at the Lodge. The Lodge’s transfer vehicle will pick you up on Saturday morning for the 4 to 5-hour drive to Estancia Laguna Verde Lodge. There are a number of comfortable hotels and good restaurants in El Calafate, plus plenty to see and do, including tours of the nearby glaciers.
Citizens of the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and other Western European nations do not need a visa for tourist trips of up to 90 days. You will need a valid passport and will have to fill in a landing card on arrival and you will be given a stamp for stays of 30, 60 or 90 days. Staple your duplicate of the landing card into your passport, next to your entrance stamp, as you’ll need it to leave the country. If you do lose it, it’s rarely a serious problem, but you’ll have to fill in a new form at the border control. On entering the country, you will also be given a customs declaration form. Duty is not charged on used personal effects, books, and other articles for non-commercial purposes, up to the value of $300. Make sure you declare any valuable electronic items such as laptop computers, as customs officers can be suspicious that you may be bringing them into the country to sell.

This destination offers extraordinary fishing and fantastic moving water action at the Lodge’s privately-controlled Barrancoso River. It is the only lodge with exclusive access to an entire tributary that flows directly into the big lake. During November and December, and again in late March through April, the river teems with huge rainbows. Guests can also fish 15 smaller lakes on the Estancia’s private property, as well as more than 8 kilometers of Moro Creek where large fish swim during the early season.
Much of the fishing takes place on Lake Strobel (Jurassic Lake) itself, with private access to more than 10 kilometers of coastline along the lake. Monster Bay, one of the best fishing areas of the lake, owes its name to the unbelievable quantity and size of the fish caught there. The stories anglers have heard about this place are true; fish in Jurassic Lake average about 7 to 9 pounds with 10 to 20-pound trout caught regularly. Spend a week at Jurassic Lake and the chances are incredibly high that you WILL catch the largest rainbow of your life!
Boats and Equipment
Almost all fishing in the area is done while wading and fishing from the banks of the lakes or the river, moving from spot to spot via the use of Honda four-wheel ATVs and trucks. Guides may use small drift boats to access certain areas of the lakes if needed. It is recommended that anglers bring all of their own equipment including rods, reels, waders, boots, all flies and terminal tackle.
Remember that Yellow Dog’s services are completely free! When you book a trip with Yellow Dog, you never pay more than when you book directly with the lodge or outfitter. All prices listed below are per person and based on double occupancy.
