Description

The ARBOR XL is built for taming fast fish that are as likely to come straight at you as they are to run away – be it a Henry’s Fork rainbow, a South Andros bonefish,
a chrome bright Bristol Bay silver, or anything in between. These technical reels feature an all-new extra-large arbor for ultra-fast line retrieval and a narrow spool that makes level-winding effortless. For those looking to gain every advantage in the most critical of situations, the ARBOR XL is almost like cheating.

Featuring Sage's tried-and-true Sealed Carbon System drag package tuned for optimum performance in each size class and a one revolution drag knob for reliable and repeatable pressure, the fully-machined ARBOR XL brings tested performance to an upgraded package for the most demanding of anglers. Available in two sizes: 4/5/6 and 6/7/8.

FAQ

Who Is the Sage Arbor XL For?
The Arbor XL makes the most sense for anglers who value fast line pickup without adding unnecessary reel weight. It's particularly useful for fish that frequently change direction during a fight—bonefish are a great example—but the 4/5/6 is also an excellent lightweight trout reel.

Why Is the Arbor XL So Large?
The diameter is intentional. A larger arbor retrieves more line with every turn of the handle, and Sage says the Arbor XL retrieves line 15% faster than a conventional large-arbor design. The narrow spool keeps the reel from becoming unnecessarily bulky and makes it easier to stack line evenly.

Is the Sage Arbor XL Suitable for Saltwater?
Yes. The 6/7/8 is particularly well suited for bonefish, redfish, and other lighter saltwater applications. Its SCS drag is sealed against water, sand, grit, and salt, while the aluminum components are hard anodized for corrosion resistance. As with any saltwater reel, rinsing it with fresh water after use is still recommended.

How Does the Arbor XL Compare to the Sage Enforcer?
They serve different purposes. The Arbor XL prioritizes low weight and extremely fast line retrieval, topping out at an 8-weight. The Enforcer is the heavier-duty option, with a more robust drag and greater rigidity for demanding saltwater fishing. Sage itself describes the Arbor XL as its choice for lighter 7- and 8-weight saltwater setups, while the Enforcer takes over for heavier applications at 9-weight and above.

What Are the Downsides of the Sage Arbor XL?
Its biggest advantage can also be a drawback: the Arbor XL is very large in diameter. Anglers who prefer a traditional-looking, compact reel may find it oversized, particularly on shorter trout rods. It also tops out at an 8-weight, so it isn't intended to replace a heavier reel like the Sage Enforcer for permit or tarpon. The Arbor XL is best viewed as a specialized lightweight reel for anglers who genuinely benefit from exceptionally fast line retrieval.
