Description

The SA Absolute Fluorocarbon Saltwater Tippet covers the four inshore class tippet weights most saltwater flats anglers use — 10, 12, 16, and 20 lb — on 30m spools using SA’s Absolute fluorocarbon formulation. The material delivers 15% higher wet knot strength than SA’s previous saltwater fluorocarbon, which is the practical measurement that matters: tippet is always wet in use, and knot integrity under sustained load is what keeps fish attached to the leader.

One detail worth noting: the SA Absolute Saltwater Tippet runs notably finer than most competitors at equivalent breaking strengths. The 16 lb material is 0.011", compared to 0.013" for equivalent-rated products from other manufacturers. This means finer presentation in clear water at the same rated strength — a practical advantage on pressured bonefish and permit flats where tippet visibility is a real factor. The stiff material formula aids turnover with heavier inshore flies and helps the tippet cut through the surface film cleanly on the initial presentation.

Each spool includes SA’s patented built-in cutter and a silicone band that holds the tippet end and protects the fluorocarbon from UV exposure between uses.

Features

•    15% Higher Wet Knot Strength — SA’s Absolute formulation produces stronger knot performance than their previous saltwater fluorocarbon material — the relevant measure since tippet is always wet in use.
•    Finer Diameters at Equivalent Strengths — Runs notably finer than most competing saltwater fluorocarbon tippets at the same rated breaking strength, offering less visible presentation in clear conditions.
•    Stiff Material for Turnover — Stiffer than trout fluorocarbon formulations for better energy transfer and fly delivery with larger inshore patterns.
•    100% Fluorocarbon — Near-invisible underwater due to low refractive index; sinks faster than nylon; more abrasion-resistant than nylon at equivalent diameters.
•    Patented Built-In Cutter Spool — One-handed tippet dispensing and cutting without nippers; integrated into the spool housing.
•    UV-Protective Silicone Band — Holds the tippet end securely and protects the fluorocarbon from UV degradation during storage.
•    4 Sizes: 10–20 lb on 30m Spools — Covers the full inshore saltwater class tippet range from light bonefish through permit and baby tarpon applications.

Size Guide

Strength Diameter Recommended Applications
10 lb 0.009" Light-tackle bonefish and redfish, bass
12 lb 0.010" Standard bonefish; light redfish, carp
16 lb 0.011" Standard permit-class tippet; redfish; triggerfish, carp
20 lb 0.013" Heavy permit and large redfish; triggerfish; snook; baby tarpon

FAQ

What is the 15% higher wet knot strength claim?
SA’s Absolute formulation is engineered to produce 15% higher wet knot strength compared to their previous fluorocarbon material. Wet knot strength is the relevant measurement for fishing since tippet is always wet in use — and fluorocarbon can lose significant strength at knot junctions when not properly tied and seated. The improved formulation is more forgiving of imperfect knot seating, though proper technique (wetting the fluorocarbon before cinching, testing with a firm pull) remains important.

Which size should I use to extend a bonefish leader?
Match the tippet to the tip section of your leader. If you’re fishing a 10 lb leader, add 12–18 inches of 10 lb SA Absolute Saltwater Tippet. If you’re fishing a 12 lb leader, use 12 lb tippet.

Which size should I use for permit?
16 lb is the standard starting point for most permit fishing situations. It’s fine enough to avoid alerting fish in clear conditions and provides adequate strength for a permit’s initial run. Move to 20 lb in variable conditions or to aid in turning over heavier patterns. The 16 lb SA Absolute at 0.011" is notably finer than most competitors’ 16 lb, which can be a meaningful stealth advantage in very clear conditions.

What is the patented cutter spool design?
The SA Absolute Saltwater Tippet comes on a spool with SA’s patented cutter built into the spool housing, allowing you to cut and dispense tippet with one hand without needing nippers. The silicone band around the spool holds the tippet end in place and also protects the fluorocarbon from UV exposure between uses, which is a practical advantage for tippet stored in a fishing vest or pack.
