Description

Winston Pure 2 9’0” 4-weight
Bauer RVR 2/3
Scientific Anglers Amplitude Double Taper Textured WF4F

When fly fishing spring creeks for trout I like a rod with flex.  I prefer the medium action Winston Pure 4-weight.  Most spring creek trout are spooky.  Its essential that I land my line and fly softly on the water and the medium action provides that delicateness.  I also fish long leaders with light tippets.  Often 5X or lighter.  Being more times than not these trout are substantial; the softer rod absorbs the shock during the strike and for those unexpected head snaps near the net so you don’t break off.  And the 9 foot length helps with mending and driving my fly for long drag free drifts.

I use the Bauer RVR 2/3 instead of the 4/5.  Some say you don’t get much backing on there.  But how often will I need backing on a spring creek?  If a fish gets that far from me he’s likely already gone.  The RVR 2/3 is so lightweight it’s a perfect casting match for my rod.  Most of the time, my reel won’t be involved at all when fighting a fish on a spring creek, but when it does, the ultra smooth drag of the RVR along with my medium action rod protects my tippet from breaking when a fish runs.

The Winston Pure medium action is not a rod for long distance casting.  I don’t use this rod when floating down a big western river.  But for dry fly specific situations on spring creeks with small dry flies, its ideal.  These are times when I’ll wade closer to the trout and get the excellent presentation needed.

While Weight Forward Lines have taken over as the standard because they help with casting in the wind and with distance, they don’t offer the incredible finesse you get with a short cast using a Double Taper Line.  On a spring creek when tucking a cast in tight to the bank requires precision, the Double Taper makes it much easier.

This outfit is the perfect spring creek outfit for any level of angler and any style of caster.
